If you're weighing up solid surface against other materials before you commit, our separate pages on Corian worktop installation and quartz worktop installation go into more depth on those specific materials. And if it's an existing solid surface worktop that's chipped, scratched or burnt rather than a full replacement you're after, our worktop repair service covers that on its own, usually without needing to remove the whole run.

What's Included When We Fit a Solid Surface Worktop

  • Free home consultation and digital templating of your existing kitchen, including any out-of-square walls or cabinetry
  • CNC fabrication of the worktop in your chosen material (Corian, Hi-Macs, Staron or Minerva)
  • Removal and legal disposal of your old worktop
  • Colour-matched adhesive jointing so seams are invisible once polished
  • Undermount sinks and drainer grooves cut from the same sheet as the worktop
  • Coved splashbacks and custom edge profiling
  • Final polishing, dust-sheet protection during the fit, and full site cleanup
  • Care kit and leftover offcuts for future repairs, plus an aftercare demonstration on handover
What's Included When We Fit a Solid Surface Worktop

Not Included / Costed Separately

  • Structural kitchen extensions or wall alterations, which need their own planning/building-regs sign-off arranged separately
  • Reconnecting hobs, taps or waste pipes beyond the sink cutout itself - our plumbers and Gas Safe engineers can be booked in alongside the worktop fit if you need this
  • Granite, quartz or marble worktops, which are different materials with their own installation process
  • The optional professional re-polishing service offered every 5-7 years, which is a separate paid visit
  • Any extra day of labour needed for unusually complex integrated features, which we'll flag and quote for before work starts, not after

Solid Surface Compared With Quartz and Granite

Worktop type Joint finish If it gets damaged Heat handling
Solid surface (Corian, Hi-Macs, Staron, Minerva) Seams are bonded and polished until they disappear completely Scratches sand out, and burns or chips can be patched invisibly with the offcuts we leave you Copes well with everyday cooking heat, though a trivet is still worth using straight off the hob
Quartz - see our quartz worktop installation page Joints show as a fine visible line even when colour-matched Chips can be filled, but a cracked slab usually needs the whole section replacing Very heat tolerant, though sudden extreme heat can still stress the resin binder
Granite - see our granite worktop installation page Joints follow the natural stone pattern, which doesn't repeat across pieces Repairable, but natural colour variation can make a patch more noticeable The most heat resistant of the three, safe straight from a hot pan

Who Templates, Joints and Fits Your Solid Surface Worktop

Solid surface behaves differently to stone at the joint. Corian, Hi-Macs, Staron and Minerva are chemically bonded and thermoformed rather than mechanically fixed, so the person doing the jointing needs to understand how each brand's adhesive cures and how the sheet moves as it sets, not just how to cut and polish a seam. That work is carried out by experienced stonemasons rather than a general fitter working outside their trade, and because your worktop is CNC-fabricated from the same digital template used for the coved splashback and undermount cutout, the sink, the drainer grooves and the edge profile are all cut from one continuous scan rather than measured and joined separately on site. When your old worktop comes out, it leaves the property with a registered waste carrier rather than going into a skip that isn't licensed for construction waste, and every fit carries a 5-year labour and installation guarantee alongside a 2-year guarantee on the material itself. The team is also a member of CITB and FSB.

Where We Template and Fit Solid Surface Worktops

Most of our solid surface fits are in Derby itself, from the streets around Sunny Hill and Chaddesden to the newer builds on the edge of Mickleover and Oakwood, with our own workshop and CNC fabrication based on Stenson Rd on the south side of the city. Long Eaton, Ilkeston, Heanor and Alfreton are close enough that the template visit and the fit visit can usually be booked as two separate short trips without adding much to your lead time. Further out, in the older stone-built properties around Wirksworth, Duffield and Belper, out-of-square walls and uneven floors are common enough that we always template digitally on site rather than working from customer measurements - unlike laminate, a solid surface sheet can't simply be trimmed to fit once it's cut, so getting the scan right first time matters more than it would with a cheaper worktop. For jobs up towards Matlock, Bakewell and Buxton in the Peak District, and into Chesterfield, Ripley, Dronfield, Swadlincote and Nottingham, we look to combine the template and fit visits on the same trip where the diary allows, which keeps travel time off your quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Makes Solid Surface Worktops Special?

Solid surface worktop materials like Corian, Hi-Macs, and Staron aren't just another kitchen surface - they're engineered solutions that solve real problems homeowners face every day. Unlike natural stone or laminate, these acrylic solid surface worktops can be shaped, molded, and joined to create completely seamless installations. The secret lies in the material composition. Solid surface kitchen worktops combine acrylic resins with mineral fillers, creating a non-porous surface that's incredibly hygienic. When we install these in Derby homes, families notice the difference immediately - no more worrying about bacteria hiding in tiny cracks or stains penetrating the surface.

How Much Do Solid Surface Worktops Cost?

The solid surface worktop cost varies significantly based on several factors: Material choice : Corian typically costs £300-500 per square metre installed Complexity : Simple straight runs cost less than complex shapes Integrated features : Undermount sinks and drainer grooves add to the price Thickness : 20mm surfaces cost less than 30mm options We always provide detailed written quotes that include all materials, fabrication, and installation costs. No hidden surprises - the price we quote is the price you pay. A typical Derby kitchen (approximately 8 square metres) with a standard layout usually costs between £2,400-£4,000 for complete solid surface installation, including removal of old worktops.

Why Choose Derby Kitchen Fitter for Your Installation?

We've been installing kitchens in Derby since 2009, and solid surface worktops have become one of our specialities. Here's what sets us apart:

Can Solid Surface Worktops Be Repaired?

This is one of the most common questions we get, and the answer is absolutely yes. Unlike granite or other natural stones, solid surface materials can be restored to like-new condition even after significant damage. Small scratches disappear with light sanding using the care kit we provide with every installation. Deeper scratches require progressively finer grits, but the repair is permanent and invisible. For more significant damage - chips, burns, or deep cuts - we can patch the area using offcut material and solid surface adhesive. Once cured and polished, the repair is completely undetectable. We recently repaired a Corian worktop in Carlton where a hot pan had left a severe burn mark. The customer was amazed when we showed them the finished repair - you literally couldn't tell where

How Long Do Solid Surface Installations Take?

Most solid surface installation projects in Derby take 1-2 days for completion: Day 1 : Removal of old worktops, final measurements, any necessary preparation Day 2 : Installation of new solid surface worktops, polishing, and cleanup Complex installations with extensive integrated features might require an additional day. We always provide realistic timescales during our initial consultation. The solid surface template process typically happens 1-2 weeks before installation, allowing time for fabrication at our workshop.

What Happens During Installation Day?

We arrive punctually with all equipment and materials needed for your solid surface installation. Here's what to expect: Morning preparation : We protect your home with dust sheets and set up our equipment Removal : Careful removal of existing worktops with minimal disruption Installation : Precise fitting of your new solid surface worktops Finishing : Professional polishing and edge work Cleanup : Complete cleanup including debris removal Handover : Full demonstration of care procedures and provision of maintenance kit Most customers are amazed at how clean we leave their homes - we take pride in our professional approach.
