Fitting granite is unforgiving of guesswork -- a slab that's been cut to the wrong measurement, or templated against a wall that isn't actually square, either won't sit flat or won't go in at all. Our team measures, templates, cuts and fits granite worktops across Derby and the surrounding Derbyshire towns, working from a home visit through to a finished, sealed worktop, with the old one taken away properly rather than left for the homeowner to dispose of. If you're weighing up granite against other options first, our stone and solid-surface worktops page covers quartz, marble, Dekton and Corian alongside it.Most jobs are part of a wider kitchen fit, and the same crew that builds the cabinets the worktop sits on does the templating, so the measurements are taken against units we know are actually level rather than a drawing handed over from someone else's job. See our bespoke cabinetry and joinery page if you're planning the cabinets and worktop together.
What's Included in a Granite Worktop Fit, and What Costs Extra
- A home visit to measure the kitchen, go through granite options and flag anything like uneven walls or an awkward layout before it becomes a problem on fitting day
- Templating, either with MDF boards for a straightforward run or digital templating for islands and waterfall edges
- Slab cutting, edge profiling (pencil, ogee, half-bullnose and similar) and polishing back at the workshop
- Cut-outs for the sink, hob and any other fittings that sit into the worktop
- Lifting and positioning the finished slabs, joining any seams with colour-matched adhesive, and sealing before handover
- Legal removal of the old worktop, since the team is a registered waste carrier
Not Included / Costed Separately
- Upstands and splashbacks, priced separately as an add-on rather than included as standard
- Reconnecting plumbing, a gas hob or electrics -- this is carried out by the firm's own plumbers, Gas Safe registered engineers and Part P electricians, but needs booking in alongside the worktop fit rather than assumed
- Extra time on properties with restricted access, such as narrow terrace hallways or upper-floor kitchens, which is priced once seen at the home visit
- Repair to base units or walls found to be damaged once the old worktop is lifted off
- Resealing and polishing after the first year, offered as a separate paid maintenance visit rather than a one-off treatment
How a Granite Worktop Fit Runs, Start to Finish
- Home visit and measure-up -- A member of the team comes out to measure the kitchen, discuss granite colours and finishes, and look at access -- doorways, stairs and turns the slab will need to travel through -- so nothing is a surprise on fitting day.
- Templating -- Once cabinets are in place (or the existing run is confirmed sound), the worktop is templated -- MDF boards for a simple run, or digital templating for islands, waterfall edges or anything with multiple angles.
- Workshop fabrication -- The template goes back to the workshop, where the slab is cut to size, edges are profiled, cut-outs made for the sink and hob, and the surface polished ready for fitting.
- Old worktop removed -- On fitting day the old worktop is disconnected and taken off site by the team as a registered waste carrier, rather than left in the garden or driveway for the homeowner to arrange disposal.
- Lifting, jointing and sealing -- The new slabs are lifted into position, any joints are made with colour-matched adhesive so the seam line is as tight as the stone allows, and the surface is sealed before handover.
- Sign-off and guarantee paperwork -- The finished worktop is checked over with the customer, any reconnected plumbing or gas is confirmed working, and the written 5-year installation and 2-year materials guarantee is handed over.
What Granite Worktops Cost in Derby
Granite typically runs from around £250-400 per square metre fitted, depending on the stone colour and grade, the length and number of runs, how many cut-outs are needed, and whether the layout includes an island or waterfall edge that needs digital templating. Upstands, splashbacks and any plumbing or electrical reconnection work are priced on top rather than folded into that per-metre figure. Because every kitchen and every slab is different, this is a guide rather than a quote -- a firm price needs a home visit so we can measure the run, see the access, and show you the actual slab before it's cut.
Granite Compared With Quartz and Marble Worktops
| Granite | Quartz | Marble | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Material | Natural stone, cut from a single quarried block | Engineered stone made from crushed quartz and resin | Natural stone, quarried in slabs |
| Pattern | One-of-a-kind veining -- no two slabs match | Consistent, repeatable pattern across the run | Distinctive veining, though colour can vary more between slabs |
| Sealing | Sealed on fitting, then resealed every 5-7 years | No sealing needed | Needs sealing and resealing more often -- it's softer and more porous |
| Heat and scratch resistance | Hardwearing -- hot pans and normal knife use won't mark it | Hardwearing, though manufacturers generally advise against very hot pans placed directly on it | Softer than granite -- more prone to scratching and etching from acidic spills |
| Typical cost | From around £250-400 per square metre fitted | Usually costs more than granite for a comparable area | Varies by stone -- priced once we've seen the slab you want |
One Qualified Crew, Not a Chain of Subcontractors
Granite here isn't measured and cut by an outside subcontractor working from someone else's kitchen plan. The same firm that builds the cabinets the worktop sits on has already set out where those carcasses go, so templating is done against units it fitted itself rather than guesswork adjusted on the day. If the new worktop means moving a tap or swapping a hob, that work goes to the firm's own plumbers, qualified to NVQ Level 2 and City & Guilds, and to its Gas Safe registered engineers where a gas hob needs disconnecting and safely recommissioning -- it isn't left as a separate job for the homeowner to book once the fitters have gone. The old worktop still leaves the property properly, taken away by a registered waste carrier rather than dumped, and the fit is covered by the same 5-year installation and 2-year materials guarantee given in writing before work starts, not a verbal promise made on the doorstep. That's what templating against a kitchen we've already fitted actually buys a customer: a slab measured off carcasses we know are square and level, cut once at the workshop, and jointed on-site to sit flush against units whose position was never in question.
Fitting Granite Across Derby's Terraces and the Derbyshire Dales' Older Stone Properties
Most jobs start close to the workshop on Stenson Rd in Sunny Hill, among the Victorian terraces of Derby -- Normanton, Pear Tree, Chaddesden and the streets around Sunny Hill itself. Houses like these often have a narrow front hallway and a turn on the stairs before the kitchen, sometimes half a level up from the front door, so getting a two-metre granite slab in without catching a doorframe or newel post is worked out at the home visit rather than on the day -- occasionally the shortest route in is through a back door or a removed window rather than the hall.
Further out into the Derbyshire Dales -- Wirksworth, Bakewell, Matlock, Belper's old mill terraces and the stone cottages around Duffield -- kitchens often sit inside walls built long before anything was plumb or square. Granite is rigid and won't flex to follow a bowed wall, so where an old wall leans or dips, the back edge of the slab is scribed to match it rather than left with a gap, and the run is packed and levelled underneath so the front joint line stays straight even though the wall behind it isn't. The same care applies to older housing in Ilkeston, Heanor and Ripley, and to split-level or basement kitchens in the Victorian villas found around Derby and out towards Chesterfield and Long Eaton, where a slab sometimes has to travel down a separate staircase from the rest of the house.
Granite Worktop Questions We Get Asked
How long does a granite worktop fit take?
The templating visit is usually an hour or two. After that, the slab is fabricated at the workshop over roughly 1-2 weeks depending on the queue and how complex the cutting is, then fitting itself is normally done in a day, or two if there's an island or a lot of cut-outs.
Can granite be fitted without replacing the cabinets underneath?
Yes, provided the existing units are level, square and sound. We check this at the home visit -- if a carcass is out of true or damaged, that gets flagged before templating rather than discovered once the slab is cut, because granite won't flex to hide a problem underneath it.
Do I need to disconnect my sink and hob before you arrive?
No -- our own plumbers and Gas Safe registered engineers handle disconnection and reconnection as part of the job. It does need to be booked in alongside the worktop fit rather than assumed, so mention it at the home visit.
Will there be a visible joint if my worktop needs more than one slab?
Where a run is longer than a single slab, or turns a corner, there will be a seam. It's jointed with colour-matched adhesive and polished flush, so it's a fine line rather than a step, but on some patterns it's more noticeable than others -- we'll show you where the joint will sit before cutting.
Does granite need sealing, and how often?
It's sealed as part of the fit, then typically needs resealing every 5-7 years depending on how it's used. Resealing after the first year isn't included in the original fit -- it's offered as a separate paid maintenance visit.
What happens to my old worktop?
It's removed and taken away legally as part of the job, since the team is a registered waste carrier. It isn't left in the garden or driveway for you to arrange a skip or collection.
Can you match granite to cabinets from Howdens, Wren or Magnet?
Yes -- the team fits independently alongside major supply-only brands including Howdens, Wren Kitchens, Magnet and premium German handleless systems, so a granite worktop can be templated and fitted to cabinets bought through any of those ranges.
Is granite a good choice for a busy family kitchen?
Generally yes -- it copes well with hot pans and everyday knife use and doesn't scratch as easily as marble. The main upkeep is the periodic resealing; if you'd rather avoid that altogether, quartz is worth comparing since it needs no sealing at all.
What if my kitchen has restricted access, like a narrow hallway or an upstairs flat?
It's priced once seen -- restricted access can mean extra time to manoeuvre a slab safely, or occasionally routing it through a window or back door instead of the front hall. We'd rather work this out and price it honestly at the home visit than add a surprise charge on fitting day.
Book a Home Visit for Your Granite Worktop
Granite is cut once, so it's worth getting the measurements, the access plan and the price agreed properly before anyone starts cutting -- a home visit costs nothing and means the quote you get is the price you pay, not one with extras added later.
