A granite worktop is usually the single biggest material change in a kitchen refit, so it matters who is actually cutting and jointing the stone. At Derby Kitchen Fitter, the templating, cutting and fitting is carried out by our own stonemasons rather than handed off to a separate subcontractor, which keeps the finish, the timescale and the guarantee under one roof. If you're still weighing up granite against the other stone and solid-surface options we work with, our kitchen worktops page runs through the full range - or read on below for what a granite job with us actually involves, what's included, and what tends to add to the price.

What's Included When We Template and Fit Your Granite Worktop

  • A free home or workshop consultation to choose slab, colour and finish
  • Laser templating carried out once your units are fitted, so cut-outs for the sink, hob and tap holes are measured to the room rather than to a plan
  • Factory cutting, edge profiling (bevelled, rounded or ogee) and hand-finishing by our stonemasons
  • Your choice of polished, honed or leathered finish
  • Removal and legal disposal of your old worktop, as a registered waste carrier
  • On-site fitting and jointing, checked back against the original template before we sign it off
What's Included When We Template and Fit Your Granite Worktop

Not Included / Costed Separately

  • Extra stone required for awkward angles, curves or larger-than-average runs, priced once the template is taken
  • Higher grades and rarer colours of granite, which cost more than our standard selection
  • Edge profiles outside our standard bevelled, rounded and ogee options
  • Any structural work to cabinets or carcasses needed to support the new worktop - assessed on the day of the site visit
  • Resealing every few years to keep the stain protection topped up - we'll tell you what's needed at handover, but it's a later maintenance job rather than part of the initial fit

Granite Against the Other Worktop Materials We Fit

Material Type Heat and scratch resistance Sealing and upkeep Best suited to
Granite Natural stone Very good, though trivets are still worth using Benefits from occasional resealing to keep stains out A one-of-a-kind natural grain and a traditional or luxury look
Quartz Engineered stone Good, but sustained heat can mark the resin binder Non-porous - no sealing, just wipe clean Consistent colour and pattern with the lowest day-to-day upkeep
Marble Natural stone Good heat resistance but softer, and acidic spills can etch it Needs regular sealing and more careful cleaning A classic look where appearance matters more than heavy daily wear
Dekton Ultra-compact engineered surface Among the most heat and scratch resistant surfaces we fit Non-porous, effectively no sealing needed Busy family kitchens or worktops that will take real punishment

Why Our Own Stonemasons Handle Every Granite Slab

Granite is a full slab replacement rather than a repair or a refinish, so the judgement calls happen at templating stage - which way the grain should run, where a joint sits least visibly, whether a vein needs centring under the sink. That's a stonemason's decision, not a fitter's, which is why the same in-house stonemasons who've been part of the crew through roughly 20 years of Derby kitchen fitting do the templating and jointing themselves, rather than passing the slab to an outside supplier who's never seen your kitchen. Cutting sink, hob and tap holes into solid stone leaves no room for a second attempt, so those cut-outs are checked against the physical units on site rather than a drawing. Because a granite worktop usually goes in as part of a wider refit, plumbing reconnections are carried out by plumbers qualified to NVQ Level 2 and City & Guilds standard, and where a gas hob is being refitted onto the new stone, that's commissioned by a Gas Safe registered engineer rather than left for someone else to sort out later. Every granite installation still carries the 5-year labour and installation guarantee and 2-year product guarantee, your old worktop is taken away under our registered waste carrier status, and as CITB and FSB members and an independent installation specialist for Howdens, Wren Kitchens and Magnet, we can template granite onto units supplied by us or bought through one of those ranges.

How Far Our Stonemasons Travel for Granite Templating and Fitting

The Derby workshop on Stenson Road in Sunny Hill is where every granite job starts, and Derby itself is where most of the fitting happens. From there the same stonemasons cover the towns to the north and west - Belper, Duffield, Heanor and Ilkeston - and out to Long Eaton and across into Nottingham on the eastern side. Further templating jobs regularly take the team to Chesterfield, Dronfield, Alfreton, Ripley, Swadlincote and Wirksworth. Up towards Matlock, Bakewell and Buxton the properties tend to be older and stone-built, so floors and walls are rarely true - which is exactly why the granite is only templated with a laser measure once your units are physically in place, rather than worked out from a plan on paper beforehand.

Granite Worktop Questions From Derby Homeowners

How long does a granite worktop installation take from template to fit?

Once your units are in place, we come out to laser template the space, then the slab is cut and hand-finished at the factory before the fitting team returns to install and joint it. As a general guide, allow roughly one to two weeks between templating and the final fit while the stone is cut - we'll confirm the timescale for your specific job at the consultation, since it depends on the granite chosen and how much cutting is involved.

Will you take away and dispose of my old worktop?

Yes. We're a registered waste carrier, so your old worktop and any other units being removed are taken away and disposed of legally as part of the job, rather than left for you to arrange separately.

What guarantee comes with a granite worktop installation?

Every installation is covered by a 5-year labour and installation guarantee, with a further 2-year guarantee on the granite and materials themselves. Details are put in writing before the work starts, so you know exactly what's covered.

Can you template and fit a granite worktop for units I've bought from somewhere else, like Howdens or Wren?

Yes. We work as an independent installation specialist for supply-only brands including Howdens, Wren Kitchens, Magnet and premium German handleless systems, so a granite worktop can be templated and fitted onto units bought through one of those ranges as well as ones we've supplied ourselves.

Can a chipped or cracked granite worktop be repaired?

Small chips can often be filled and polished back so they're barely visible, and hairline cracks can sometimes be stabilised, but a crack running through the slab usually means replacing that section rather than repairing it. If you're not sure how serious the damage is, it's worth having a stonemason look at it in person before deciding.

Do I need to seal my granite worktop myself after it's fitted?

We'll advise on the right sealant for your particular granite at handover, since porosity varies between colours and grades. Most granite benefits from resealing roughly every 3 to 5 years to keep staining at bay - this is a maintenance job you can do yourself with a quality stone sealer, or we can advise on a professional-grade product if you'd rather have it done for you.
