What's Included When We Fit or Re-Profile Your Worktop Edge

  • Laser templating of the worktop run and edge profile before any cutting begins
  • CNC profiling for granite, quartz and porcelain edges, or hand-routing for laminate and solid surface
  • Fitting and bonding the finished worktop onto your existing or new cabinetry
  • Jointing of stone and solid-surface worktop sections by experienced stonemasons
  • Sealing of natural stone edges where the material calls for it
  • Sanding and polishing the finished edge so there are no rough spots or visible tool marks
What's Included When We Fit or Re-Profile Your Worktop Edge

Not Included / Costed Separately

  • Removing and disposing of your old worktop - this can be added to the quote, as we're a registered waste carrier, but say so upfront so it's costed in
  • Cutting new sink, hob or drainer grooves that weren't part of the original specification - these need agreeing before templating
  • Repairing chips or cracks in a worktop you're keeping rather than replacing, which is usually a separate small job
  • Structural changes to cabinets or carcasses needed to support a heavier material such as granite or quartz

From First Measurement to a Finished Edge

  1. Design visit -- A free visit to look at the space, talk through edge profile options against your cabinetry and units, and take away samples if you're deciding between materials.
  2. Written quote -- An itemised quote covering material, edge profile and fitting, agreed before any cutting is booked in, so there are no costs added later.
  3. Laser templating -- Once base units are in place, a laser template is taken of the actual run on site rather than working from paper measurements, so cut-outs and joints line up exactly.
  4. Cutting and profiling -- Granite, quartz and porcelain are cut and profiled off-site on CNC machinery for a consistent edge; laminate and solid surface can be profiled on site.
  5. Fitting and sign-off -- The worktop is fitted, joints between sections finished by our stonemasons or joiners, edges sealed where needed, then checked with you before we hand over the written guarantee.

What Drives the Cost of Worktop Edging

Material is the biggest factor: laminate edging costs the least and is the cheapest to replace if it's damaged, while granite, quartz and porcelain cost more but hold their edge profile and finish for longer. The edge profile itself also affects price - a square edge needs the least machining time, while curved profiles like ogee or bullnose take longer to cut and polish, particularly in stone. Other factors include the length of the worktop run, how many joints are needed, and whether you're re-profiling an existing worktop or fitting a new one from scratch. Because of this, we don't quote worktop edging over the phone - a site visit and laser template lets us give you a written, itemised price with nothing added later.

Comparing the Main Worktop Edge Profiles

Edge Profile Look Best Suited To Upkeep
Bullnose Full continuous curve, no sharp corners Family kitchens, traditional or contemporary schemes Low - rounded edge resists chipping and sheds moisture
Bevel Angled, chamfered top edge Modern, minimalist kitchens wanting a slimmer profile Low - no corners for dirt to collect in
Ogee Decorative double S-curve Traditional or higher-spec kitchens wanting a design feature Low, though the curves take longer to machine
Square Sharp, right-angled edge Cost-conscious or contemporary fits wanting a crisp line Moderate - corners are more prone to chips under impact
Curved Gentle rounded curve, less pronounced than bullnose Softer look without going fully bullnose Low
Pencil Slim curve top and bottom Streamlined, refined finish in modern or traditional kitchens Low

Edging Work Handled by the Right Trade at Each Step

Because so many edging jobs start with units already fitted by Howdens, Wren, Magnet or a German handleless system, being an independent installation specialist for those brands means we can pick up a worktop swap or re-profile without needing the original supplier involved. The profiling itself falls to our stonemasons, who CNC-cut and hand-polish granite, quartz and porcelain edges so the curve or bevel stays even along the whole run rather than tapering off at the ends, which is a common sign of a rushed job. Where the new edge meets existing cabinetry, City & Guilds-trained joiners check the fit is flush before anything is bonded down, since a worktop even a millimetre proud at the join catches every time you wipe past it. CITB and FSB membership backs the way jobs are run day to day, and every edge we fit carries a 5-year labour and installation guarantee alongside a 2-year guarantee on products. Old worktops are removed and disposed of legally as we're a registered waste carrier, and the same team has been cutting and fitting worktops across Derbyshire for around 20 years.

Worktop Edging Fitted Across Derby and the Wider Area

The workshop on Stenson Rd in Sunny Hill covers Derby edging jobs directly, then reaches out to Duffield, Belper and Wirksworth to the north-west and on to Matlock and the Peak District edge towns of Bakewell and Buxton, where cottage kitchens and older stone-built properties often need a template taken carefully around uneven walls. Heading the other way, Ilkeston, Long Eaton and Chesterfield are all regular runs, and we take on jobs over the county line into Nottingham and Nottinghamshire too. Wherever the job is, the same laser template and CNC profiling process applies, so an edge cut for a kitchen out towards Chesterfield is machined to the same tolerance as one finished round the corner from the workshop.

Worktop Edging Questions We're Asked in Derby Kitchens

Can I change the edge profile without replacing the whole worktop?

Sometimes. Granite, quartz and solid surface worktops often have enough depth to be re-profiled - routing a bullnose or bevel into an existing square edge, for example - but laminate worktops usually can't be reworked, because cutting a new profile would cut through the laminate layer into the chipboard core underneath. A site visit lets us check the material and remaining depth before quoting either way.

Which edge profile is safest for a kitchen with young children?

Bullnose and curved edges remove sharp corners entirely, which is why they're a common choice for family kitchens. Pencil and bevel edges soften the edge without the full rounded profile of a bullnose, so they're a middle ground if you want some of the safety benefit with a slimmer look.

Do stone worktop edges need sealing, and how often?

Granite and some solid surface materials benefit from sealing to stop staining and water getting in at the edge, typically every one to two years depending on how the kitchen's used. Quartz, porcelain and most solid surface materials are non-porous and don't need sealing at all - it's worth checking which applies to your worktop when it's fitted.

What happens to my old worktop when it's taken out?

We're a registered waste carrier, so we can remove and legally dispose of your old worktop and units as part of the job rather than leaving you to arrange separate disposal. Mention it when you get your quote so it's costed in from the start rather than added on later.

Can a chipped worktop edge be repaired, or does it need replacing?

Granite, quartz and porcelain chips can usually be professionally repaired if the damage is minor, though it's not always invisible depending on the colour and finish. Laminate edging is less repairable but is inexpensive enough that replacing the affected section is often the simpler option.

Is a decorative edge like ogee or bullnose more expensive than a square edge?

Yes, generally. A square edge needs the least machining and is the quickest to cut, so it costs less in labour even before the material price is factored in. Curved profiles like ogee and bullnose take longer to cut and polish, particularly in stone, which adds to the price - though the difference is usually a smaller part of the overall job than the material choice itself.

How long does fitting take once the worktop's been cut?

Once a piece has been cut and polished off-site to the laser template, the on-site fitting itself is usually quick - a straightforward run can often go in within a day. Kitchens with more joints, integrated sinks or multiple runs take longer, which is something we'll talk through at the quote stage rather than guess at over the phone.

Do you fit worktops onto units that weren't supplied by you?

Yes. We're an independent installation specialist for major supply-only brands including Howdens, Wren Kitchens, Magnet and premium German handleless systems, so an edging job or worktop swap on cabinetry we didn't originally fit is something we take on regularly.
