Nottingham kitchens throw up problems you don't see as often in a plain new-build: Victorian terraces near the Lace Market and the Meadows with uneven original floors, 1930s semis out toward West Bridgford and Beeston with narrow galley layouts, and newer estate builds where the kitchen doubles as the main family space and has to earn its keep. Derby Kitchen Fitter has been planning, supplying and fitting kitchens for around two decades, working out of a registered workshop in Sunny Hill, Derby, and taking on renovations throughout Nottingham and the surrounding towns.
Every trade a kitchen needs - design, joinery, plumbing, electrics, gas and plastering - comes from the same team rather than a string of subcontractors you have to chase and coordinate yourself. Whether you want a full strip-out and rebuild, a kitchen supplied by Howdens, Wren Kitchens or Magnet fitted properly, or an existing kitchen resprayed rather than replaced, the same qualified trades and the same written guarantee apply.
A full renovation is a longer job than swapping a few units, and it's worth knowing that going in. Once the old kitchen is out, most Nottingham homes are without a working kitchen for some part of the job while first-fix plumbing and electrics go in, units are fitted and the worktop is templated and cut - we'll talk you through the likely timeline at the design visit once we've seen the size of the room and how much of the trade list the job actually needs, rather than guessing at a figure before we've seen it. If you're weighing up a full strip-out against a respray, or bringing in a kitchen you've already bought from elsewhere, that's exactly the sort of question the design visit is for.
What's Included in a Nottingham Kitchen Renovation
- A free design visit to your Nottingham home to measure up and talk through layout options, with CAD design so you can see the finished kitchen before committing to anything
- Removal and legal disposal of your old units and materials through our own registered waste carrier licence, so there's no separate skip hire or tip run to arrange
- Cabinetry supply and fitting - either our own Symphony Group ranges or, since we also work as an independent installation specialist, fitting a kitchen you've bought yourself from Howdens, Wren Kitchens, Magnet or a premium German handleless system
- Worktop templating and fitting in granite, quartz, laminate, marble, Dekton, Corian or Minerva, jointed on site by experienced stonemasons
- Plumbing connections for sinks, taps, dishwashers and washing machines, carried out by plumbers qualified to NVQ Level 2 and City & Guilds standard
- Electrical work for sockets, under-cabinet lighting and integrated appliances, carried out by Part P registered electricians who issue full safety certificates
- Gas hob and range cooker fitting, connection and commissioning by Gas Safe registered engineers
- Plastering to make good walls once units and tiling are in, carried out by master plasterers
- Spray respraying or resurfacing of existing doors and carcasses, colour-matched to ranges such as Farrow & Ball or Little Greene, as a lower-cost alternative to full replacement where the layout still works
- Tiling or splashback fitting behind the worktop and hob once units and surfaces are in place
- Boxing in and fitting integrated ovens, hobs, extractor hoods, fridge-freezers and dishwashers so they sit flush with the new cabinetry
- Floor levelling and preparation under the new units where the existing floor isn't flat enough to fit against
- Handle, hinge and soft-close mechanism fitting and adjustment as part of the cabinetry install, so doors and drawers are set and aligned properly rather than left to settle over time
Not Included / Costed Separately
- Major structural work, such as removing a load-bearing wall or altering ceilings, is priced separately once we've seen the site rather than folded into a headline kitchen figure
- Moving plumbing away from existing pipe runs - for example relocating a sink or dishwasher to a different wall - is priced once the exact new run has been confirmed on site
- Electrical upgrades such as a new consumer unit or extra circuit capacity, if your existing supply can't take the new kitchen's load
- Any council fee for a building regulations application - we handle the paperwork on the rare Nottingham properties that need formal sign-off, but the fee itself isn't included in the kitchen price
- Knocking through to an adjoining room to create an open-plan kitchen-diner - that's structural work, priced once we've inspected the wall and, where needed, arranged a structural engineer's input
- Appliances themselves aren't included unless you ask us to supply them - we're happy to advise on models, but you're free to buy ovens, hobs and fridges from wherever you like and we'll fit them
How We Deliver a Kitchen Renovation in Nottingham, Start to Finish
- Free design visit and measure-up -- We visit your Nottingham home to measure the room, check pipe and cable runs, and talk through layout options, including whether a full renovation or a respray of your existing units is the better fit. We'll also flag anything that's likely to need separate pricing, such as a stud wall or an awkward boiler position, before you commit to anything.
- CAD design and written quote -- You get a CAD design showing the finished layout before anything is ordered, plus a written, itemised quote so you know what's included and what would be priced as an extra, such as structural work or moving plumbing runs. Nothing is ordered or booked in until you've signed off the design.
- Strip-out and first-fix trades -- Old units and materials are removed and taken away through our own registered waste carrier licence, then first-fix plumbing and electrics go in ahead of the new cabinetry. This is also the point where anything hidden behind the old units - an awkward pipe run, an old boiler flue, an uneven floor - comes to light, so we'll flag it and confirm any change to the quote before carrying on rather than after the event. This is usually the stage where the kitchen is out of action, so we'll agree with you in advance how you'll manage cooking and washing up in the meantime.
- Cabinetry, worktop and appliance fitting -- Joiners fit the new units, stonemasons template and fit the worktop on site, and Gas Safe registered engineers connect and commission any gas hob or range cooker. Appliances are boxed in and integrated once the worktop is down, and doors, drawers and soft-close mechanisms are adjusted so everything closes and sits level before we move on to the next trade.
- Plastering and finishing -- Master plasterers make good the walls once units and tiling are in, and Part P registered electricians complete sockets, lighting and appliance wiring, issuing safety certificates as they go. Splashback tiling is fitted at this stage too.
- Sign-off and guarantee -- A final walk-through checks everything against the original quote, with the 5-year labour and installation guarantee and 2-year product guarantee confirmed in writing. Any snagging points get scheduled in before we consider the job finished, and you're left with the certificates and guarantee paperwork for the property, not just a finished kitchen.
What a Nottingham Kitchen Renovation Costs
Kitchen renovation prices vary a lot depending on the size of the room, the units and worktop material you choose, and how much of the trade list - plumbing, electrics, gas and plastering - a job actually needs. A respray or resurface of existing doors and carcasses costs less than a full strip-out and rebuild, and fitting a kitchen you've already bought from Howdens, Wren Kitchens or Magnet is priced differently to one of our own designed and built ranges. Worktop material makes a real difference too - laminate sits at the lower end, with granite, quartz and Dekton costing more depending on the slab and the amount of cutting and jointing involved. Structural work, moving plumbing runs, or upgrading the electrical supply all add to the total once they're needed. A full renovation that needs every trade on the list - plumbing, electrics, gas and plastering together - generally costs more than a straightforward unit swap into an existing layout, simply because there's more qualified labour and more site time involved from strip-out to sign-off. Because of that, we don't publish a single headline figure - the free design visit is where we measure the room, talk through what you want, and put together a written, itemised quote so you know exactly what you're paying for before any work starts.
How We Compare to Flat-Pack Suppliers and Single-Trade Fitters
| Flat-pack supply-only retailer | A single independent fitter | Derby Kitchen Fitter | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trades on site | None - self-assembly or find your own | Usually just the fitter; other trades subcontracted separately | Joiners, NVQ-qualified plumbers, Part P electricians, Gas Safe engineers and master plasterers, scheduled as one team |
| Paperwork you receive | Manufacturer instructions only | Varies by tradesperson | Part P electrical safety certificates and Gas Safe certification on every relevant job |
| Guarantee | Manufacturer product guarantee only | Often informal, verbal | 5-year labour and installation guarantee plus 2-year product guarantee, in writing |
| Old kitchen removal | Your responsibility | Often charged as an extra | Included, disposed of through our registered waste carrier |
| Kitchens they'll fit | Their own range only | Depends on the individual fitter | Our own designs, or independent fitting of Howdens, Wren Kitchens, Magnet and premium German handleless kitchens |
| Scheduling across a full renovation | You book and coordinate each trade yourself | Depends on that fitter's own diary and subcontractors | One schedule from strip-out to sign-off, run by the same team that did the design visit |
| Design changes once work starts | Limited - you're working from a fixed flat-pack plan | Depends on whether other trades can adjust their booking | CAD design signed off before ordering, with any variations agreed and priced before work continues |
Why a Full Renovation Needs One Team Running the Sequence
A full kitchen renovation is a longer job than most other kitchen work we do, and the risk isn't usually any single trade doing a bad job - it's the gaps between trades. Plastering has to wait until first-fix electrics and plumbing are in but happen before the final units go up; the worktop can't be templated until the base units are fixed and level; gas connection has to be commissioned and certified before anything gets boxed in and inaccessible. On a renovation that runs over several weeks, getting that order wrong is what causes the delays and follow-up visits homeowners tell us about from previous jobs elsewhere, where each trade was booked separately and nobody owned the whole sequence. We run it as one project from the design visit onward, so the same team that measured up on day one is scheduling the plasterer around the electrician and the stonemason around the joiner, rather than you doing that coordination yourself between separate invoices.
That same team also fits kitchens you've bought elsewhere. If you're renovating around a Howdens, Wren Kitchens or Magnet kitchen you've already ordered, or a premium German handleless system, the installation goes through the same sequencing and the same 5-year labour and installation guarantee as one of our own designed ranges - the guarantee isn't limited to kitchens we've supplied. Membership of CITB and the Federation of Small Businesses, and a registered waste carrier licence for what comes out of the old kitchen, are part of how the job runs rather than a list to be recited on their own.
On older Nottingham properties we regularly find the boiler sitting in the cupboard the new layout would otherwise use, or a soil stack running through the spot that would work best for a peninsula - problems that only become obvious once the old units are stripped out, not from a set of photos beforehand. Because our own plumbers and electricians are on site rather than a subcontractor booked in for a single day, the plan can be adjusted there and then, on the same visit, instead of the job stopping while someone tries to get a specialist back out.
Kitchen Renovations Across Nottingham and Derbyshire
Nottingham sits around 15 miles east of our Sunny Hill workshop in Derby, and it's one of the areas we fit in most often - from Victorian terraces near the Lace Market and the Meadows with original solid floors and box-room kitchens, to 1930s semis around West Bridgford and Beeston with narrow galley layouts, to newer estate housing on the edges of the city where an open-plan kitchen-diner is usually the brief. Older terraces in Sneinton and Sherwood tend to have the same narrow hallways and tight stair turns as the Lace Market, which affects how large a unit or worktop slab we can get into the kitchen without splitting it, and it's something we check on the design visit rather than after delivery. Canal-side apartments around the Lace Market and Trent Bridge sometimes mean a lift booking or a restricted delivery window, which we build into the schedule once we've confirmed the address. Further out, the 1960s and 1970s estate housing around Clifton and Bilborough tends to have wider kitchens with more room for an open-plan reconfiguration than the tighter room sizes closer to the centre, which changes what's realistic for a layout before we've even discussed units and worktops. The A52 (Brian Clough Way) runs straight between Derby and Nottingham, with Long Eaton sitting roughly at the midpoint, which helps when we're coordinating deliveries and scheduling trades on a job. Beyond Nottingham itself we cover the wider county too: Chesterfield, Belper, Ilkeston, Heanor, Alfreton, Swadlincote, Ripley and Duffield, so the same team can take on multiple properties for landlords or developers working across the area.
