Dryer Installation Derby
Free Consultation
01332-529933
The first real decision with dryer installation isn't which brand to buy - it's whether the machine can vent outside at all, and that single question decides most of what happens next before a screw goes in. We fit vented, condenser, heat pump, integrated and stacked dryers across Derby, connecting, venting or draining, and testing each one properly, usually as part of the kitchen and utility room work we've been doing through Derby Kitchen Fitter for around two decades.
Most of the dryer fitting we do falls into one of two jobs: a line item inside a bigger kitchen or utility refit, where the joiner building your cabinetry also builds in the appliance housing and the electrician wires the connection while they're already on site; or a standalone visit, where you've bought a replacement dryer yourself and just need it positioned, vented or drained, wired in and tested. Either way it's the same qualified trades doing the work - not one person guessing at ducting lengths and hoping the socket's rated right.
What's Included - and What Depends on Which Type of Dryer You Choose
- Working out on the spot whether a vented, condenser or heat pump dryer actually suits the room, before anything gets fixed to a wall or plumbed in
- Wall-vent fitting for vented dryers - drilling the exit hole, fitting the external vent hood and sealing the penetration properly
- Drain connection for condenser or heat pump dryers, where you'd rather it drained away than have a tank to empty
- Positioning and levelling your new dryer in the agreed spot, whichever of the above types you've gone with
- Safe electrical connection to a suitable existing circuit, checked and signed off by a Part P registered electrician
- Integrated dryer fitting behind kitchen cabinet doors - door-front attachment, alignment and airflow spacing, done by our joiners
- Stacking kit fitting for washer-dryer towers, with a check that the two machines are actually compatible before we start
- A full test cycle and a walkthrough of the programme settings before we pack up
- Removal and legal disposal of your old machine through our registered waste carrier licence, if you want it gone
Not Included / Costed Separately
- Supplying the dryer itself - we fit appliances you've bought or ones supplied as part of a kitchen project; we're not an appliance retailer
- Repairing a dryer that arrives faulty or breaks down later - that's a manufacturer or retailer warranty matter, not an installation one
- New consumer unit work or circuit upgrades, if your existing electrics can't safely take the load - our electrician will tell you if that's needed and it's quoted separately
- Structural alterations such as widening a doorway or knocking through a wall for access
- Gas-fired tumble dryers - genuinely rare in Derby now, and outside what our Gas Safe engineers cover, since their gas work is hobs and range cookers
- Planning permission or listed building consent, where your property needs it - we'll flag it during the site visit, but the application itself is down to you
Two Ways This Job Usually Starts, and Where They Meet
- Which job is this -- Tell us whether you've already got a dryer needing fitted on its own, or whether this is part of a kitchen or utility refit already in motion. A standalone swap and a dryer going into a room with no existing services are different conversations from the start, and knowing which one it is changes what we ask next.
- Checking the room actually supports the type you want -- For anything beyond a straight swap, someone comes out to look at where the nearest suitable circuit is, whether there's an external wall within a sensible hose run for venting, and whether the space is big enough once you account for door swing and airflow round the back of the machine. If venting won't work well here, we'll say so at this stage rather than after it's fitted.
- A written number before anyone picks up a drill -- You get a price in writing covering the fitting itself, any vent kit or ducting, drainage work if it applies, and disposal of the old machine if you want that included.
- Fitting, wiring and, if needed, a cabinet door -- The dryer goes in, gets levelled, wired to a checked circuit, and vented or drained depending on type. If it's an integrated unit, the joiner fits the cabinet door front and adjusts it so it closes properly with the machine running behind it.
- A full test, not just a power-on check, then clearance -- We run a complete cycle before we leave and walk you through the programme settings, then take the packaging - and your old machine, if that's part of the job - away with us rather than leaving anything behind.
Vent Kits, Appliance Prices, and Why Labour Needs a Look at the Room
Pricing on dryer fitting swings more than people expect, because the job itself varies so much. A vent kit typically runs somewhere in the £10-£20 range before labour, which covers the hose, ducting and wall vent hood for a straightforward vented install near an external wall. Heat pump dryers themselves - the appliance, not the fitting - tend to start from around £350 for an entry-level unit, running up considerably for larger drums or better energy ratings, which is worth knowing before you commit to that route on running-cost grounds alone. What we can't give you honestly over the phone is a fixed labour figure, because it depends on things that only show up on site: how far the machine sits from an external wall, whether the existing socket and circuit can take the load or need attention from the electrician, whether you want an integrated cabinet door fitted and aligned, and whether the old machine needs taking away. A straight swap of a like-for-like vented dryer in the same spot is a different job from an integrated heat pump dryer going into a new utility room with no existing services nearby. That's why we'll always want a look at the actual room, or at minimum a proper phone conversation about what's already there, before quoting a number you can hold us to.
Vented, Condenser or Heat Pump - What Actually Suits Your Kitchen
| Dryer type | Needs an external wall | What the install adds | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vented | Yes, for the hose to exit through | Vent kit, ducting, external vent hood, wall penetration and seal | Utility rooms or kitchens with a nearby outside wall, and the lowest appliance cost |
| Condenser | No - collects water in a tank or drains away | Drain connection if you don't want to empty a tank, extra airflow space | Mid-terrace kitchens and flats with no realistic outside wall |
| Heat pump | No - sealed system, nothing vented outside | More clearance around the unit, optional permanent drain | Households wanting lower running costs and gentler drying, for a higher upfront price |
| Integrated | Depends on the dryer type fitted inside | Cabinet door-front fitting and alignment by a joiner | Kitchens where the dryer needs to disappear behind matching cabinetry |
Telling You When a Vented Dryer Is a Bad Idea, Not Just Fitting One Anyway
The first thing we do on a dryer job isn't reach for a drill - it's work out whether venting is actually a sensible option for the room, and we'll tell you honestly if it isn't, even though a vented dryer is usually the cheaper appliance to buy. Long duct runs and mid-terrace utility spaces with no external wall in reach are where vented dryers cause damp and mould within a year, and steering you toward a condenser or heat pump dryer instead, before you've spent the money, matters more than just fitting whatever you turn up with. Once the right type is settled, the actual work touches up to three trades - electrics, sometimes plumbing for drainage, and joinery if it's going behind a cabinet door - and we carry all three on the team already, because that's what a kitchen install needs anyway. The electrical connection is handled by Part P registered electricians who issue a proper safety certificate for the work, not a verbal "that'll be fine." A permanent drain for a condenser or heat pump dryer is plumbing work carried out by plumbers qualified to NVQ Level 2 and City & Guilds standard. And a cabinet door built to hide the machine is built and hung by joiners with a City & Guilds and bench-joinery background - the same people who build the rest of your kitchen cabinetry, so the alignment actually matches. The old machine leaves site properly too, through our registered waste carrier licence, rather than getting left by the bins. All of it sits under the same 5-year labour and installation guarantee we put on the rest of our work, and we're members of CITB and the Federation of Small Businesses - a real, traceable business behind the guarantee, not a one-van operation that might not answer next winter. The team at Derby Kitchen Fitter has been doing this kind of work across Derbyshire for around 20 years, and dryer fitting keeps coming up because it's rarely a standalone job on its own terms - it's usually the last piece of a kitchen or utility refit, and easier finished by the same crew who built the room.
Terraced Streets, External Walls, and Why Derby's Housing Stock Decides the Dryer Type
Derby's housing stock decides the dryer type more than most people expect, which is why what's under the roof matters as much as the town list below it. A lot of Derby's older terraced streets - the sort you'll find around Normanton, Pear Tree and parts of Chaddesden - have the utility area or kitchen sitting mid-terrace with no external wall within a sensible hose run, which rules out a straightforward vented dryer and points you toward condenser or heat pump instead. Newer estates on the edges of the city, and the semi-detached stock in areas like Allestree or Mickleover, more often have an external wall close enough that venting through it is the simpler and cheaper option. Our workshop is based at Stenson Rd in Sunny Hill, Derby, which keeps most jobs within a short run whichever side of the city you're on. Beyond Derby itself, the same crew covers Chesterfield, Long Eaton, Belper, Ilkeston, Heanor, Alfreton, Swadlincote, Ripley, Matlock, Dronfield, Duffield, Wirksworth, Bakewell and Buxton, plus parts of Nottingham - so if a dryer job is going in alongside a kitchen fit anywhere across that patch, it's one visit and one team rather than booking a separate appliance fitter on top.
Dryer Venting, Cost and Fitting Questions From Derby Households
I don't have external wall access near where I want the dryer - what are my options?
You're not stuck. Condenser and heat pump dryers don't need to vent outside at all - condenser models collect water in a tank you empty, or can be plumbed to a drain, and heat pump dryers work the same way while running cooler and cheaper. This comes up constantly in Derby's mid-terrace properties where the kitchen or utility space sits between neighbouring houses with no outside wall in reach. A vented dryer just isn't practical there, so we'd steer you toward one of the other two types instead.
Can a condenser or heat pump dryer be installed in a fully internal room with no windows or external wall at all?
Yes, that's actually where they earn their keep, but the room still needs proper air circulation - not a sealed cupboard with the door shut. We'll check there's enough clearance around the unit and that the space isn't going to trap heat and moisture, because even a non-vented dryer puts warmth and some humidity into the room it sits in. If the space is genuinely airless, we might suggest a small extractor or a gap under the door rather than turning down the job outright.
Is there a limit to how far a vented dryer's ducting can run in an older terrace house?
Practically, yes. The further the hose has to travel to reach an outside wall, the more it fights against airflow and the more condensation tends to build up inside the ducting, which is exactly the damp-and-mould problem venting is supposed to avoid. In a lot of Derby's Victorian terraces, the utility space is far enough from the nearest external wall that a long duct run isn't sensible, and we'd rather tell you that upfront and recommend condenser or heat pump instead than fit something that's going to cause problems within a year.
How much does dryer installation cost in Derby?
It depends more on the job than the postcode. A vent kit for a straightforward vented dryer near an external wall typically costs around £10-£20 before labour, and heat pump dryer units themselves usually start from about £350 for an entry-level model. Labour isn't something we can put a single figure on without seeing the room, because a like-for-like swap and a new integrated install in a room with no existing services are genuinely different jobs. Give us a call with the details and we'll either quote over the phone for something simple or arrange a quick site visit for anything more involved.
Can dryer installation be booked alongside a new kitchen fit, and does it hold up building control sign-off?
It can, and for most of our kitchen clients that's exactly how it happens - the dryer goes in as part of the project once the cabinetry, electrics and plumbing are in place, rather than as a separate visit afterwards. It doesn't hold anything up on the building control side either; appliance fitting itself isn't something building control inspects, so it can be scheduled around whatever stage the wider kitchen or extension project is at without affecting sign-off timing.
Do I need to book an electrician separately, or is that included?
It's included. Our Part P registered electricians handle the electrical connection as part of the job and issue the safety certificate for it, so you're not left trying to find a separate sparky to check a socket after we've gone. If your existing circuit genuinely isn't suitable for the load - which does happen with older properties and higher-powered dryers - that gets flagged before we start, with the extra work quoted separately rather than sprung on you afterwards.
Can an integrated dryer really be hidden fully behind a kitchen cabinet door?
Yes, and it's one of the jobs our joiners do regularly - the cabinet door front gets attached to the dryer itself and aligned so it opens and closes like any other cupboard door in the run. The one thing that has to be right is airflow: an integrated dryer still needs some ventilation space behind and around it, so we won't box it in so tightly that it overheats or struggles to dry properly, even though from the outside it looks like a normal cabinet.
Does a dryer vent installation need planning permission on a conservation-area property in Derby?
Generally no - fitting an external wall vent for a dryer is treated as a minor alteration and falls under permitted development in most cases, even on a conservation-area property, because it doesn't change the external appearance in any significant way. Listed buildings are a different matter and can need consent for any wall penetration, so if your property's listed rather than just in a conservation area, that's worth checking with the local authority before we drill anything - we'll flag it during the site visit either way.
Will you take our old dryer away when the new one goes in?
Yes, if you want it gone. We're a registered waste carrier, so the old machine gets taken away and disposed of properly rather than left for you to deal with, and that's usually built into the quote for the job rather than tacked on as a surprise extra afterwards.

Get the Venting Decision Right Before We Fit Anything
A dryer vented the wrong way, or squeezed into a spot with no airflow, doesn't usually fail on day one - it shows up as damp patches, mould creeping along a wall, or a circuit that trips every time it's run, sometimes months later. Sorting the type and the connection correctly from the outset means one visit rather than two, whether it's a standalone swap or folded into a kitchen refit already under way. Get in touch with what you've got and where it's going, and we'll give you a straight answer on whether venting will actually work for your room.
