A shelf that's built for the wall it's going on, rather than picked off a shop shelf and hoped for the best, holds its line for years instead of months. We design and fit floating, bracket and built-in shelving for alcoves, home offices, pantries and studies across Derby, working out the right timber, bracket and fixing for the load you actually want to put on it. The same joiners who cut cabinetry for our kitchen installations build the shelving, so mitred corners, housed joints and hidden brackets are cut on a bench rather than knocked together on site.A fair few of our shelving call-outs start as a repair rather than a fresh design - a shelf sagging in the middle, a bracket working loose from plasterboard, or a run that was never quite level with the alcove it sits in. Getting it right first time is mostly about matching bracket and fixing to the wall and the load, not just to how the shelf looks once it's up. If you're looking at storage elsewhere in the house at the same time, the same joinery team also fits fitted wardrobes and home office joinery, so a shelving job can be planned alongside a wider storage project in one visit rather than as a separate call-out.

Timber, Brackets and Fixings: What's Included and What Costs Extra

  • Design and measuring up on site, including working out the right shelf thickness and bracket for what you'll actually be storing - books, kitchenware, box files and ornaments all need a different spec.
  • Solid timber or painted/oiled MDF shelving, cut and finished to your sizes, from our stock timbers of pine, oak and walnut.
  • Hidden floating brackets let into the wall and housed into the underside of the shelf, for a clean line with no visible fixings.
  • Visible bracket shelving in steel, cast iron or timber brackets, sized to the load - typically used in pantries, garages, utility rooms and heavier storage.
  • Built-in alcove and under-stairs shelving, made and scribed to the exact dimensions of a chimney-breast recess, understair triangle or box room.
Timber, Brackets and Fixings: What's Included and What Costs Extra
  • Fitting into brick, block, plasterboard and stud walls, including extra fixings or noggins where a stud wall needs reinforcing to carry the load safely.
  • Levelling every shelf to the room rather than just to the wall - a lot of older Derby terraces have walls or floors slightly out of true, and a shelf fixed dead level to a wall that isn't square can end up looking crooked against the skirting or ceiling.
  • End caps and mitred returns where a built-in run needs to butt up neatly against existing skirting or architrave, so the join doesn't look like an afterthought.
  • Removal and disposal of old shelving, brackets and fixings.
  • A written, itemised quote before any work is booked in, with no additions once it's agreed.

Not Included / Costed Separately

  • Repairing or repainting the wall itself once old shelving or fixings are removed isn't part of a standard installation - it can be added to the quote if the wall needs it, and we'll say so honestly if we can see plaster damage during the home visit.
  • Extra bracing behind plasterboard or stud walls, where a shelf needs to carry more weight than the wall can currently take unaided, is priced once we've had a proper look rather than guessed over the phone.
  • Specialist finishes such as spray-lacquered colour matching, or shelves mixing wood with metal or stone, are quoted once the exact materials are confirmed, as these take longer than a standard painted or oiled finish.
  • Sourcing an unusual timber to match existing furniture can add to both the lead time and the price compared with our normal stock timbers.
The Stages Between Your Enquiry and a Finished Shelf

The Stages Between Your Enquiry and a Finished Shelf

  1. Initial enquiry and home visit: You tell us roughly what you want to store and where, and we book a free home visit to measure the space, check the wall type - brick, block, plasterboard or stud - and talk through timber and bracket options.
  2. Design and written quote: We work out the shelf thickness, bracket type and any extra bracing the wall needs for the load you've described, then send a written, itemised quote with nothing added once the price is agreed.
  1. Timber preparation and joinery: Shelves are cut, sanded and finished - painted, oiled or lacquered - in the workshop, with mitred corners and bracket housings cut on the bench rather than on site. A painted or oiled finish needs proper drying time before it leaves the workshop, which is factored into the lead time rather than rushed. Standard stock timbers are usually ready to fit within one to two weeks of the quote being signed off; a special-order timber to match existing furniture can add another one to two weeks.
  2. Fitting: On the fitting day we lay dust sheets, mark up bracket positions, fix into the correct point in the wall structure - noggin, stud or masonry - and fit and level the shelving. A simple run of one or two shelves is often finished within half a day; a full wall of built-in shelving typically takes a day or two.
  3. Sign-off and clean-up: We check the shelving is level and secure for the load discussed, clear away offcuts, dust and packaging, and take away old shelving or brackets for disposal.

Timber, Brackets and Wall Type: What Drives the Price

Price mostly comes down to three things: the material, the number and size of the shelves, and how they're fixed. A simple pine or painted MDF shelf costs less than one in solid oak or walnut, partly because of the raw material and partly because hardwood takes longer to sand and finish to a good standard. A floating shelf with a hidden bracket takes longer to fit properly than one on visible brackets, because the bracket has to be let into the wall and the shelf itself needs a housing cut for it - that extra joinery time is reflected in the price. Built-in alcove or under-stairs runs are priced by the linear metre rather than per shelf, since each one is scribed individually to a recess that's rarely perfectly square, and that fitting time adds up over a full wall

Timber, Brackets and Wall Type: What Drives the Price

compared with a single freestanding shelf. Stud walls sometimes need extra fixings or noggins to carry weight safely, which can add a little time compared with fixing into solid brick or block, and an unusual timber ordered specially to match existing furniture costs more than our standard stock. Because every wall, room and design is different, there's no fixed price list - the free home visit lets us measure up, see the wall type, and talk through what you'll be storing, and you get a written quote with no hidden extras before any work is booked in.

Floating, Bracket or Built-In: Which Shelving Suits Your Space

Shelving type Look Typical weight it can hold Typical time to fit Works well for
Floating shelf (hidden bracket) No visible fixings, clean minimal line 15-35kg per shelf on solid wood, properly fixed Around half a day for a small run Kitchen display, alcoves, modern living rooms
Visible bracket shelving Bracket is part of the look, from simple to decorative Often more than a hidden-bracket floating shelf, depending on the bracket and fixing Similar to floating shelves, sometimes a little quicker Pantries, heavier storage, garages and utility rooms
Built-in alcove or bespoke run Fitted flush to the wall, made to the exact space Depends on the construction, but generally the most robust option A full day or two for a whole wall Chimney-breast alcoves, home offices, full storage walls

Bench-Cut Joints and Housed Brackets: The Detail Behind a Shelf That Holds

A shelf just screwed straight into plasterboard usually only holds what a couple of wall plugs can take - often not much more than a row of paperbacks before it starts to sag or pull away. Getting a floating shelf to carry 20-30kg of books or kitchenware safely means finding the noggin or stud, letting a hidden bracket into the wall at the right depth, and cutting a housing into the underside of the shelf so the two lock together rather than the shelf just sitting on top of a bracket. That's bench-joinery work, and it's done by the same joiners who cut our fitted kitchen cabinetry, trained to City & Guilds standard. The same care applies to alcove and under-stairs shelving, where the recess is rarely square - a shelf cut to a standard drawing rather than

Bench-Cut Joints and Housed Brackets: The Detail Behind a Shelf That Holds

scribed to the actual wall ends up with gaps at the back or sides once it's in, so each one is measured and fitted to the individual space. Where a job calls for a painted finish to match existing woodwork, the same team that colour-matches spray finishes to ranges like Farrow & Ball and Little Greene on our resurfacing jobs can match a shelf to it too, rather than leaving you with an off-the-peg white. Old shelving, brackets and offcuts are cleared and disposed of properly, as the business is a registered waste carrier, and every shelving job carries the same 5-year installation guarantee and 2-year product guarantee as a fitted kitchen.

From Sunny Hill Terraces to the Wider Derbyshire Towns

From Sunny Hill Terraces to the Wider Derbyshire Towns

Our workshop is on Stenson Road in Sunny Hill, Derby, and most of our shelving jobs are within the city itself - from Victorian terraces in areas like Normanton and Pear Tree, where chimney-breast alcoves either side of the fireplace are one of the most common jobs we're asked to fit, to newer estates in Mickleover, Chellaston and Oakwood, where understairs cupboards and box-room studies are usually the starting point. Terraced hallways and staircases in those older streets are often narrower than modern builds, which is one reason built-in shelving is cut and finished to size in the workshop rather than assembled on site - it's easier to carry a finished shelf through a tight doorway than a full sheet of timber and a set of tools. We also cover the surrounding towns as part of the same kitchen and joinery

rounds - Belper, Duffield, Heanor, Ilkeston, Long Eaton, Alfreton, Ripley, Swadlincote, Dronfield, Chesterfield, Wirksworth, Matlock, Bakewell, Buxton and into Nottingham - so a shelving job can often be booked alongside other joinery work in one visit.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

How much weight can a floating shelf actually hold?

It depends on the wall and the bracket, but a properly fixed floating shelf into brick or block, with the bracket housed into solid timber, typically holds 15-35kg per shelf. Into a stud wall the safe load is usually lower unless we add extra noggins, which is something we check on the home visit rather than guess over the phone.

Can you fit shelving into a stud or plasterboard wall?

Yes - we find the studs and add extra noggins where the wall needs reinforcing to carry the shelf safely. This sometimes adds a little time to the fitting day compared with fixing straight into brick or block, but it's built into the quote once we've seen the wall.

Will the shelving fit an alcove or under-stairs space exactly?

Most alcoves and stair recesses aren't perfectly square, so rather than cutting to a standard size we measure and scribe each shelf to the actual wall, which avoids gaps at the back or sides once it's fitted.

Can you match an unusual timber to existing furniture?

In most cases, yes, though sourcing a timber outside our standard stock of pine, oak and walnut can add to both the lead time and the cost - we'll say so honestly at quote stage if a match will take longer to source.

Can you match the shelf finish to my existing paintwork or skirting?

Yes - painted and oiled shelves can be colour-matched, and for a factory-grade sprayed finish the same team that colour-matches to ranges like Farrow & Ball and Little Greene on our resurfacing jobs can match a shelf too. Bring the colour reference to the design visit, whether that's a paint tin lid or a photo, so we can order the right paint or lacquer.

What happens if the wall turns out weaker than expected once you start?

If we find a stud wall or old plaster that won't safely take the fixings we planned for, we stop and talk it through with you rather than pressing on - extra bracing or a different fixing method is priced separately, so you're never charged for something you didn't agree to.

How long does a shelving job take?

A simple run of one or two shelves is usually finished within half a day. A full wall of built-in alcove shelving typically takes a day or two. Lead time before the fitting day is usually one to two weeks from the quote being agreed, longer if you've chosen a special-order timber.

Do you repair the wall once old shelving is removed?

Taking down old shelving and fixings is included, but making good the wall itself - filling holes, repainting or replastering - isn't part of a standard installation. It's easy to add to the quote if you'd like it done at the same time.

Do you take old shelving away?

Yes - we remove and dispose of old shelving, brackets and offcuts as part of the job. We're a registered waste carrier, so it's disposed of legally rather than left for you to deal with.

Do you cover areas outside Derby?

Yes - alongside Derby itself we regularly work in Belper, Duffield, Heanor, Ilkeston, Long Eaton, Alfreton, Ripley, Swadlincote, Chesterfield, Dronfield, Wirksworth, Matlock, Bakewell, Buxton and Nottingham, usually as part of the same joinery and kitchen rounds.
