A new worktop changes the feel of a kitchen more than almost any other single job, but it's also one of the least forgiving to get wrong. Base units have to be properly fixed and level before a template is worth taking, and a stone slab cut even a few millimetres off will show at every join and appliance cut-out for as long as it's in your kitchen. Derby Kitchen Fitter has been planning, supplying and fitting kitchens - worktops included - across Derby and the surrounding towns for around two decades, with stone and solid-surface materials templated and jointed by stonemasons rather than handed to a general fitting team.
Whether you're replacing a tired laminate top, swapping in quartz or granite, or need a worktop fitted onto units someone else supplied, the sections below set out what's actually included, what tends to cost extra, how the materials compare day to day, and what a realistic timeline looks like before you book a site visit.
What's Included When We Fit Your New Worktop
- A free in-home measure and material sample selection before you commit to anything
- Laser templating for stone and solid-surface worktops (granite, marble, quartz, Dekton, Corian, Minerva) once your base units are fixed and level
- Cutting, edge-profiling and seamless jointing of stone and solid-surface worktops by experienced stonemasons
- Fitting of laminate and solid wood worktops by our joinery team
- Standard appliance cut-outs for hob and sink
- Removal and legal disposal of your old worktop - we're a registered waste carrier
- Gas Safe registered connection and commissioning if you're fitting a new gas hob at the same time
- A final sealant finish around edges, upstands and joins, plus a written sign-off before we leave

Not Included / Costed Separately
- Ongoing maintenance products such as stone sealer or wood oil, and the labour to reapply them later - these are your responsibility after fitting
- Extra structural support if your existing cabinets need reinforcing to take a heavy stone slab - priced separately once we've assessed them
- Curved edges, waterfall ends or multiple breakfast-bar overhangs - quoted individually because of the extra template and support work involved
- Access surcharges for upper-floor flats or narrow terrace hallways where a slab has to be carried in by hand
- Listed-building or conservation-area consent - obtaining this remains the homeowner's responsibility before we book a fitting date
How We Plan and Fit Your New Countertop
- Free measure and material consultation -- We visit your kitchen, talk through budget and how the space actually gets used day to day, and bring samples of the materials you're considering.
- Material order and lead time confirmation -- Once you've chosen a material, we confirm slab or laminate stock with our suppliers and give you a realistic fitting date rather than a rough guess.
- Base units finished and levelled -- A worktop template is only as accurate as the cabinets underneath, so we check units are fixed and level before templating goes ahead.
- Laser templating for stone and solid-surface materials -- For granite, marble, quartz, Dekton, Corian and Minerva, our stonemasons take a precise digital template on site so the slab is cut to your kitchen, not a standard size.
- Fabrication and fitting -- The worktop is cut, edge-profiled and jointed off-site, then delivered and fitted, with appliance cut-outs completed in your kitchen on the day.
- Final check and sign-off -- We check joins, seals and levels with you before we leave, and put your labour and product guarantees in writing.
Worktop Materials Side by Side
| Material | Installed cost (per sq ft) | Day-to-day durability | Maintenance needed | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Laminate | £35-£75 | Chips or scratches under heavy use | Wipe clean, no treatment needed | Budget-conscious families, rental properties |
| Solid wood | £45-£110 | Can be sanded and refinished if damaged | Oiling every 6-12 months | Period properties, natural-finish kitchens |
| Quartz | £75-£155 | Very high - scratch and stain resistant | Soap and water, no sealing | Busy family kitchens wanting low maintenance |
| Granite | £70-£155 | High, but needs resealing to stay stain resistant | Professional resealing every 1-2 years | Homeowners wanting natural stone character |
| Marble | £110-£350+ | Stains and etches easily from acidic spills | Careful daily cleaning, periodic professional care | Adult households prioritising luxury appearance |
| Corian / solid surface | £125-£300 | High and repairable if scratched | Minimal, occasional light buffing | Seamless integrated sinks and contemporary kitchens |
Stonemason-Fitted Worktops, Not Just Supplied
A worktop fitting only goes right if the sequence behind it does. Base units need to be fixed and properly level before a template is worth taking, the template itself has to account for how a slab actually sits under its own weight, and appliance cut-outs have to be marked against a hob and sink you've already chosen - not a generic size. Get any of that out of order and you end up with hairline gaps at the wall, a cut-out that's a few millimetres off, or a joint that catches the eye under kitchen lighting, all of which cost more to correct after fitting than they would have taken to get right at template stage. That's why stone and solid-surface work here - granite, marble, quartz, Dekton, Corian and Minerva - goes through the same stonemasons every time rather than whoever's free that week, and why laminate and solid wood runs go to joiners with a City & Guilds bench-joinery background who understand how a wood top moves once it's sitting above a dishwasher or oven.
Where a job crosses trades - a new gas hob going in alongside the worktop, or a run of under-cabinet lighting wired into it - the same crew brings a Gas Safe registered engineer or Part P electrician into the schedule, rather than leaving you to line up a second contractor around our fitting day. It's also why we're regularly asked to fit worktops onto kitchens that were originally supplied by Howdens, Wren, Magnet or a German handleless brand - the team fits worktop-only jobs on units it didn't build as easily as it fits worktops on its own kitchens. Every job carries a 5-year labour and installation guarantee and a 2-year guarantee on the material itself, and your old worktop is removed under our registered waste carrier licence as a matter of course, once the part of the job that actually determines whether it looks right has been done properly.
Worktop Fitting Across Derby and the Surrounding Area
Most worktop fitting jobs are in Derby itself, with the team also working further out across Derbyshire and into Nottinghamshire as part of the same round of scheduling. Derby's own older housing stock has a real effect on how a job runs on site: Victorian terraces in suburbs such as Normanton and Chaddesden tend to have narrow hallways and tight stair turns, so a stone slab often has to be carried in by hand rather than wheeled in on a trolley, and that's factored into the fitting-day timing rather than treated as a surprise. Upper-floor flats inside older period conversions add similar time for the same reason - there's simply less room to manoeuvre a heavy piece of stone. Parts of Derby's older suburbs also fall inside conservation areas or include listed buildings, and where that applies, any consent for internal alterations still needs to be sorted by the homeowner before a fitting date goes in the diary. Being within reach of stone fabricators and suppliers around Nottingham and Sheffield keeps material choice wide and lead times reasonable wherever in the wider area a job happens to be.
Worktop Costs and Fitting: Common Questions
How long does it take to fit a new worktop?
A straightforward laminate or quartz worktop over one or two runs can usually be fitted in a day once your base units are ready. Stone worktops take longer overall because the slab has to be templated on site first, then cut and jointed off-site before the return fitting visit - budget for a template visit followed by a fitting day roughly one to three weeks later, depending on the fabricator's schedule.
Can you fit a new worktop onto my existing kitchen units?
In most cases, yes, provided the units are sound, level and properly fixed - that's exactly what templating checks for. Heavier stone slabs sometimes need extra support brackets or reinforcement if the existing carcasses weren't built with stone in mind, which we'd flag and price at the template stage rather than as a surprise on fitting day.
Do I need to seal my granite worktop, and how often?
Yes - granite is porous enough that it benefits from resealing roughly every one to two years to stay stain resistant. Quartz and solid surface materials don't need this because they're non-porous, which is one of the main reasons families with young children tend to lean towards quartz.
What happens to my old worktop when it's removed?
It's taken away and disposed of legally as part of the job - we're a registered waste carrier, so you don't need to arrange separate removal or work out where it ends up.
Is the price per square foot the whole story, or are there extras I should budget for?
The per-square-foot figures cover material and standard installation, but template visits, extra appliance cut-outs, complex edge profiles, support brackets for overhangs and difficult-access surcharges are genuinely separate costs on some jobs. A written itemised quote after your site visit sets all of this out before any work starts, so there are no surprises on the invoice.
Which material do most Derby customers actually choose?
Quartz is the most common choice for family kitchens because it copes well with daily use and needs almost no maintenance. Laminate remains popular for tighter budgets or rental properties, and granite still gets chosen regularly by people who want natural stone and are happy with the periodic sealing it needs.
Can you fit a worktop I've bought elsewhere, or does it have to come through you?
We can generally fit slabs or worktops supplied by other stockists, though we'd still need to template and check the material meets the thickness and support requirements for your units. It's worth telling us where the material is coming from when you book your visit so we can plan the job properly.
