A kitchen that's genuinely mobility-friendly needs more than a lowered worktop - it needs the plumbing, electrics and gas connections behind those features fitted by people qualified to sign off on them safely. Our kitchen installation team plans each adaptation, whether that's knee space under a sink, a lower hob, or a pull-down cabinet, as part of one project-managed fit, rather than leaving you to book separate contractors and hope the pieces line up on the day.

Worktop choice matters more in an accessible kitchen than a standard one: rounded front edges, a heat-resistant surface near a lowered hob, and a finish that copes with a wheelchair footplate knocking against the base units day after day. Our worktop range covers materials suited to that kind of daily use, fitted to the height and reach measurements agreed at your design visit.

What's Included When You Adapt a Kitchen for Accessibility

  • Height-adjustable, remote-controlled or fixed-height worktops set to the measurements agreed at your design visit
  • Knee clearance built in under sinks and worktops, with heat-resistant pull-out shelving positioned nearby
  • Pull-down wall cabinets, full-extension drawers and pull-out corner storage so nothing needs a reach or a stretch
  • Lever taps, sensor taps and touch-open doors for anyone with limited grip or dexterity
  • Side-hinged ovens and side-accessible appliance positioning for wheelchair users
  • High-contrast worktops, handles and non-slip flooring to help with visual impairment and reduce fall risk
  • Layouts checked against building-regulations turning circles, reach ranges and worktop heights before we fit anything

Not Included / Costed Separately

  • Structural work such as removing a load-bearing wall or repositioning drainage and soil pipes - this is quoted separately once a site visit confirms what's actually needed
  • Adaptations elsewhere in the home, such as an accessible bathroom or widened hallway doors, which fall outside a kitchen-only quote
  • The Disabled Facilities Grant application itself - we can point you toward the right process, but the assessment and award decision sit with the council, not with us
  • New appliances, unless you specifically ask us to source and fit them as part of the project

How an Accessible Adaptation Gets Planned and Fitted

  1. Free design visit and CAD options -- A designer measures the space in person - doorway widths, turning circles, worktop and hob heights against your reach range - and puts together CAD layout options so you can see how knee space, pull-down cabinets or a side-hinged oven would actually sit before anything is ordered.
  2. Written itemised quote -- Once the layout is agreed, you get a written quote broken down by item rather than a single lump sum, so you can see what the worktop, cabinetry, sensor taps and any rewiring or pipework each cost, with VAT relief applied where the adaptation qualifies.
  3. Trades scheduled in sequence -- The plumber reroutes pipework and creates knee clearance first, the joiner builds and fits cabinetry around it, the Part P registered electrician wires and certifies sensor taps and lighting, and a Gas Safe registered engineer moves and recommissions any gas hob or range - each stage booked so the next trade isn't waiting around or working over someone else's unfinished section.
  4. Fit and snagging -- Units, worktops and accessible features go in against the measurements taken at the design visit, with layouts checked against turning circles and reach ranges as the fit progresses rather than only at the end.
  5. Sign-off walkthrough -- You walk the finished kitchen with the fitter, test every tap, drawer and appliance at the height it was designed for, and receive the guarantee paperwork - 5 years on labour and installation, 2 years on products - in writing.

Accessible Kitchen Costs, VAT Relief and Grants

Guide prices for accessible adaptations in Derby run from around £5,000 for targeted changes such as pull-out shelving, lever taps and knee space under one section of worktop, up to £15,000-£25,000+ for a full redesign with adjustable worktops, wheelchair turning space and structural changes - the comparison below sets out what typically sits in between. Many disability-related adaptations, including height-adjustable worktops and features fitted specifically because of a diagnosed condition, can qualify for VAT relief, reflected on your invoice once eligibility is confirmed - it isn't automatic and depends on the adaptation and your circumstances. Where the work is funded in whole or part through a Disabled Facilities Grant, the council's own assessment and award process runs separately from our quote, and timings vary by local authority. None of these figures replace a proper quote: reach heights, doorway widths, existing pipework and the condition of the walls all change what a job actually needs, so a written itemised price only follows a site visit.

Comparing Your Accessible Kitchen Options

Option Typical scope Guide price Time on site
Targeted modifications Swap cupboards for drawers, add pull-out shelving, fit lever or sensor taps, create knee space under one section of worktop From around £5,000 A few days to a week
Partial accessible remodel Revised worktop heights in the main work zone, updated storage, rewiring for lighting or sensor taps From around £12,000 1-2 weeks
Full accessible kitchen redesign Complete new layout with adjustable or fixed accessible worktops, wheelchair turning space, side-access appliances and structural changes where needed £15,000-£25,000+ 2-4 weeks

The Team Behind Every Accessible Adaptation

An accessible kitchen puts more trades through the same few centimetres than a standard one: a knee-space pipe run, a sensor-tap circuit and a lowered hob connection can all need to share the space under a single section of worktop, and if any one of those goes in out of sequence, the next trade is left working round pipework or cabling that's already fixed in the wall. That's the reason we run every adaptation as one project-managed fit rather than a chain of separate call-outs. As CITB and FSB members with around 20 years fitting kitchens across Derby and Derbyshire, our plumbers - qualified to NVQ Level 2 and City & Guilds - reroute pipework and create knee clearance before the joiner, trained to City & Guilds bench-joinery standard, builds cabinetry around it; the Part P registered electrician wires and certifies sensor taps and task lighting; and if a hob or range needs moving, a Gas Safe registered engineer handles the disconnection and recommissioning. Everything is backed by the same 5-year labour guarantee and 2-year product guarantee as a standard kitchen, and as a registered waste carrier we take the old units away rather than leaving you to arrange a skip. As the team put it: "We only fit kitchens to the standard we'd want in our own homes - and we put that in writing before we start."

Our Base in Sunny Hill and the Towns We Cover From There

We fit accessible kitchens throughout Derby, from Victorian terraces to newer builds, working out of our workshop on Stenson Rd in Sunny Hill, as well as across Derbyshire towns including Belper, Ilkeston, Long Eaton, Heanor and Ripley, and into Nottingham. One detail worth knowing if you're outside the Derby city boundary: Disabled Facilities Grants are administered by your own local council rather than Derby City Council, so the application route - and sometimes the funding cap - varies by area. We can point you toward the right department once we know where you are.

Accessible Kitchen Questions We're Asked Most

What guarantee comes with an accessible kitchen installation?

Every accessible kitchen we fit carries a 5-year guarantee on our labour and installation, plus a 2-year guarantee on the units and worktops themselves. That matters more with accessible features than with a standard kitchen, because a sensor tap or adjustable-worktop mechanism failing is a bigger problem for someone relying on it day to day. If something needs adjusting or fixing within that period, we come back and sort it.

Who actually fits the plumbing, wiring and gas connections for accessible features?

Not general labourers. Plumbing connections are carried out by plumbers qualified to NVQ Level 2 and City & Guilds, electrical work such as sensor taps, task lighting and any rewiring for a lowered hob or repositioned sockets is done by Part P registered electricians who issue full safety certificates, and any gas hob or range cooker that needs moving or recommissioning is handled by Gas Safe registered engineers. Each trade signs off its own work rather than one fitter attempting all of it.

What happens to my old kitchen units and appliances?

We remove and dispose of them for you. As a registered waste carrier, we're able to clear old units, worktops and appliances legally, so you don't need to arrange separate skip hire or a council collection.

Can I get VAT relief on an accessible kitchen adaptation?

Some accessibility-related work qualifies for VAT relief where it's fitted specifically because of a diagnosed condition - height-adjustable worktops are a common example. It isn't automatic across the whole job, so we confirm what applies to your specific adaptation before the final invoice is raised, rather than assuming everything qualifies.

Do you handle the Disabled Facilities Grant application?

No - the assessment and award decision sit with your local council, not with us, and the process varies depending on which authority covers your address. What we can do is give you a written itemised quote early, which is usually what the council needs to see before a grant is approved, and point you toward the right department to start that process.

How long does an accessible kitchen adaptation take?

It depends on the scope. Targeted changes such as pull-out shelving, lever taps and knee space under one section of worktop typically take a few days to a week. A partial remodel covering the main work zone runs 1-2 weeks, and a full accessible redesign with structural changes is usually 2-4 weeks. We confirm timing against your specific layout at the design visit.

Will an adjustable-height worktop cope with everyday use?

Yes, provided the mechanism and surface are specified for the job. We fit heat-resistant surfaces with rounded front edges near lowered hobs, and materials chosen to cope with repeated contact from a wheelchair footplate against the base units - a standard laminate edge or a delicate stone finish isn't always the right choice here, and we'll say so at the design stage if it isn't.

Can you adapt a kitchen I already have rather than replacing it?

Often, yes. Targeted modifications - swapping cupboards for drawers, adding pull-out shelving, fitting lever or sensor taps, or opening knee space under one section of worktop - can be done against an existing layout without a full strip-out, which is usually the cheaper and faster route if the rest of the kitchen still works for you.

Get Your Accessible Kitchen Measured and Quoted

If a Disabled Facilities Grant is part of how this gets funded, councils often work to their own timelines, so getting a design visit booked and a written quote in hand early gives you something concrete to put in front of them rather than starting that process from scratch. Every adaptation is planned around the measurements that matter for you - reach range, turning circle, worktop height - before anything is ordered, and backed by the same 5-year labour and installation guarantee as the rest of our kitchens.
