If your kitchen cabinets are sound but the doors have dated, chipped, or gone out of style, vinyl wrapping is usually a faster and cheaper way to change the look than pulling everything out and starting again. It's a specialist finish rather than a coat of paint - the vinyl is heat-formed around each door and drawer front and the edges are sealed, so a well-prepped kitchen can come out close to a factory finish. Cabinet wrapping is part of the wider kitchen design, supply and installation work we carry out from our Derby workshop, and it's one of the jobs we're asked for most by landlords in Nottingham's rental areas around Lenton and Dunkirk, updating a kitchen's look between tenants rather than replacing it outright. We take on jobs ranging from a handful of doors to a full kitchen re-skin.
Not every kitchen is a good candidate for wrapping, and we'd rather tell you that at the quote stage than after the job has started - the scope below sets out what wrapping can put right and what it can't.
What Our Nottingham Vinyl Wrapping Service Covers
- Degreasing, sanding, filling and priming existing cabinet doors and drawer fronts before any vinyl goes on
- Heat-formed vinyl wrapping of doors, drawer fronts and visible cabinet end panels
- Edge sealing so the wrap doesn't lift at corners and cut-outs over time
- Handle and hinge refitting, or an upgrade to new hardware if you want it
- Masking and protecting worktops, flooring and appliances while the work is carried out
- Colour and finish matching, including wood-grain and textured effects, checked against samples in your own kitchen before the job is confirmed
Not Included / Costed Separately
- Replacing cabinet carcasses, shelving or internal fittings - the wrap covers the visible faces, not the box behind them
- Doors that are swollen, delaminating or water-damaged - these usually need replacing rather than wrapping, and we'll say so at the site visit rather than wrap over a problem that will fail early
- Worktops, sinks and appliances - these are quoted and fitted separately if you want them changed alongside the wrap
- Electrical or plumbing changes - if prep work uncovers wiring or pipework that needs moving, that's carried out by our Part P electricians or plumbers and priced separately
- Structural repairs to a damaged carcass - our City & Guilds trained joiners can rebuild or replace it, but that's priced as joinery work, not folded into the wrap
How a Vinyl Wrapping Job Runs, Start to Finish
- Initial call and consultation -- You describe the state of your current doors and the look you're after; we'll talk through whether wrapping, respraying or new doors is the better fit before booking a visit.
- Site visit and sample check -- We look at the cabinets in person, check for damage or damp that would rule wrapping out, and hold vinyl samples against your worktop and flooring so the colour is chosen in your own kitchen light.
- Written, itemised quote -- Priced by door and drawer count and the amount of preparation the cabinets need, with nothing added later that wasn't in the original quote.
- Preparation on site -- Doors and drawer fronts are removed, degreased, sanded and any chips or dents filled; worktops, appliances and flooring are masked off before any vinyl is applied.
- Wrapping and edge sealing -- Each face is wrapped using heat-forming for a smooth, seamless finish, with pattern alignment on wood-grain or textured vinyls and sealed edges around handles and cut-outs.
- Refit and sign-off -- Doors and drawers are refitted, handles and hinges fitted or upgraded, and we walk the finished kitchen with you before sign-off and confirming guarantees in writing.
What Vinyl Wrapping Costs
Vinyl wrapping is generally priced by how many doors and drawer fronts need covering and how much prep they need, not by a flat per-kitchen rate. As a rough guide, wrapping a single tier of units - say a run of wall cabinets - starts at around £1,200, while a full kitchen re-skin covering wall and base units plus end panels can run to £6,800 or more depending on the number of doors and the finish chosen. Doors that need heavier filling or repair before they'll take a wrap add to the price, which is exactly why we check them in person rather than quote over the phone. A full, itemised quote needs a site visit so we can count the doors, check their condition, and confirm the finish against samples in your own kitchen.
Vinyl Wrap Compared with Respraying and New Doors
| Option | Typical cost | Time in your kitchen | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vinyl wrap | Roughly £1,200 for a single-tier wrap up to £6,800+ for a full kitchen re-skin | A few days up to around a week and a half, depending on scope | Sound cabinets and doors that just need a colour or finish change |
| Spray respray | Priced after a site visit | Similar short timescale, using dust-free, factory-grade spraying on site | Solid timber or previously painted doors you want colour-matched to a specific paint reference |
| New doors and drawer fronts | Priced after a site visit | Longer lead time while made-to-measure fronts are manufactured | Doors that are damaged, warped, or the wrong style to wrap over |
| Full kitchen replacement | Priced after a design visit | A full project timeline with several trades involved | Layout changes, worn-out carcases, or a complete renovation |
Trade-Qualified Cover, Not Just a Wrap-and-Go Job
Wrapping only works if two things happen in the right order: honest triage on which doors will actually take a wrap, and precise heat-forming on the ones that will. That's the sequence we follow on every job - checking doors before we quote, not after the vinyl's gone on and it's too late to change plan. If a door turns out to be swollen or the substrate has gone soft once it's stripped down, our own joiners - City & Guilds trained with a bench-joinery background - can machine a replacement front rather than us bringing in a separate supplier and adding weeks to the job. Everything that comes off the cabinets during the job - old doors, packaging, offcuts - is taken away and disposed of properly under our registered waste carrier licence, so it isn't left for you to skip. The finished wrap carries a 5-year guarantee on the installation and 2 years on the vinyl itself, and the same CITB and FSB membership that stands behind our joinery and worktop work covers this side of the business too.
Vinyl Wrapping Coverage Across Nottingham and Derby
We're based in Derby and work across Nottingham as part of our regular area, alongside Chesterfield, Long Eaton, Belper and the towns in between. A fair share of our Nottingham wrapping work comes from landlords in the student and professional rental streets around Lenton, Dunkirk and Beeston, where kitchens are often laminate or foil-faced units fitted during the 1990s and 2000s rental boom - sound underneath but tired-looking after several changes of tenant, which is exactly the kind of job wrapping is built for. We also wrap in the larger family homes around West Bridgford and Wollaton, where older kitchens tend to have solid timber or veneer doors that take a heat-formed wrap well once they've been properly degreased and prepped.
Vinyl Wrapping Questions from Nottingham Kitchens
Will vinyl wrapping work on any kitchen door, or are some cabinets not suitable?
It depends on what's under the current finish. Vinyl wraps well onto sound MDF, veneer, laminate or previously painted doors, but doors that have swollen, delaminated or taken in water around the sink or dishwasher usually won't hold a wrap properly and are better replaced. We check this at the site visit before quoting, rather than wrap over a door that's likely to fail early.
How long does a vinyl wrapped kitchen last before it needs redoing?
A well-prepped wrap on sound doors typically holds up for several years of normal family use before the finish starts to look tired, and longer on surfaces that see less handling, like end panels. The areas that take the most punishment - the door next to the kettle, drawer fronts opened several times a day - are usually the first to show wear, which is normal and doesn't mean the whole wrap has failed.
Can vinyl wrapping be used near the hob and sink, where there's heat and steam?
Yes, provided the prep is done properly. Heat-formed vinyl is edge-sealed specifically because those are the areas most exposed to steam from a kettle or hob and splashes at the sink. What we won't do is wrap a door that's already showing bubbling or lifted edges from heat or water damage - that's a sign the substrate underneath needs replacing, not wrapping over.
How does vinyl wrapping compare to painting or spraying cabinet doors?
Spraying suits solid timber or previously painted doors where you want an exact colour match to a specific paint reference, and it changes the paint film itself rather than adding a material over the top. Wrapping instead applies a heat-formed vinyl layer, which suits laminate, veneer or moulded MDF doors that wouldn't take a sprayed finish as well. We tell you at the site visit which process fits your actual doors rather than defaulting to whichever is easier for us.
What colours and finishes are available for a wrapped kitchen?
Matt, gloss, wood-grain and textured stone-effect vinyls are all available. We hold physical samples against your worktop and flooring at the site visit rather than working from a screen, since kitchen lighting changes how a colour reads once it's applied across a full run of doors.
How long does a vinyl wrapping job take from start to finish?
Most single-tier jobs, such as just the wall units, take a few days on site. A full run of wall and base units with end panels usually takes up to around a week and a half, depending on how much preparation the doors need before wrapping starts.
Can a vinyl wrap be removed later if I want to change the kitchen again?
Vinyl wrap isn't designed to be peeled off and reused - if you want a different look later, the usual next step is a respray or new doors rather than stripping the wrap back to bare MDF. Worth bearing in mind if you think you might want to change the colour again within a couple of years.
Do you wrap kitchens in rental properties between tenants?
Yes, this is one of the jobs we're asked for most around Nottingham's rental areas. Wrapping is quicker to schedule between tenancies than a full kitchen replacement, and because it's priced by door and drawer count, it's straightforward for a landlord to budget for as part of a changeover.
