Flat-pack kitchen furniture - base units, wall cabinets, larders, breakfast bar seating, even dining tables and chairs bought to match a new kitchen - usually arrives as a stack of boxes with an instruction sheet that assumes a perfectly square wall and a spare afternoon. Derby's housing stock rarely offers either. A lot of the terraced streets around Normanton and Pear Tree have skirting boards and door frames that have shifted slightly over a century, while newer estates such as Chellaston, Mickleover and Oakwood often fit a full run of units into a kitchen-diner with very little spare wall to work with. Getting a cabinet run level, flush and properly fixed on either type of property is a different job to building a bookcase, and it's one our joiners and fitters do every week across Derby and the surrounding towns.
We check every panel and fixing pack against the order before starting, and build on site rather than off-site so each unit can be scribed to the wall and floor it's actually going against. If the job also needs a socket moved, a dishwasher plumbed in or a gas hob connected, that's arranged for the same visit through our electrical and plumbing connections service, and if the furniture is part of a wider refit rather than a standalone replacement, our full kitchen fitting service may be the better starting point.
What's Covered by Our Assembly Service (and What's Booked Separately)
- Assembly of flat-pack base units, wall cabinets, larder/tower units and drawer packs from any major supply-only range, including Howdens, Wren Kitchens, Magnet and premium German handleless systems
- Fitting breakfast bar seating, bar stools and dining tables/chairs bought to match a new kitchen
- Scribing and levelling each unit to the actual wall and floor rather than the flat diagram, so doors and drawers sit flush - particularly relevant on older Derby terraces where a wall or floor has moved slightly over time
- Fixing units with the correct fittings for the surface behind them - plasterboard, brick or stud - so they're properly load-rated for worktops, crockery and appliances
- Fitting integrated appliance housings (fridge, oven, dishwasher casings) ready to receive the appliance
- Small on-the-day trims and adjustments to make a unit fit around existing skirting, pipe boxing or an out-of-square corner
- Removal and legal disposal of packaging, offcuts and any old units being replaced, handled by our registered waste carrier status
Not Included / Costed Separately
- Plumbing or electrical connections for the finished item - available as a separate job from our qualified trades, not part of the basic assembly price
- Sourcing replacement parts direct from a retailer if a component turns up missing or damaged - we'll help you raise it with them and can often supply common fixings on the day, but we can't guarantee a match for retailer-specific hardware
- Major structural changes to make an item fit an unusual space - small adjustments are made as we go, but anything more than that needs discussing and quoting before the day
How an Assembly Booking Runs, Start to Finish
- Get in touch with the details -- Tell us what's arrived - the brand, how many units, and whether it's base cabinets, wall units, a larder, or dining furniture to match - along with your postcode and anything unusual about access, such as stairs, restricted parking or a narrow hallway. That's enough for a fair estimate and a booked slot.
- Boxes checked before anything is built -- On arrival, the fitter checks every box and fixing pack against the order before cutting anything open, so a missing or damaged part is flagged straight away rather than found halfway through the job.
- Units built and fixed in place -- Each carcass is built, scribed to the wall and floor as they actually are rather than the flat diagram, and fixed with fittings suited to the wall type behind it. Doors, drawers and hinges are adjusted so they close flush before the fitter moves on.
- Trade work scheduled alongside it, if booked -- Where sockets, plumbing or a gas connection are needed for the finished item, that work is arranged for the same visit through our Part P electricians, NVQ-qualified plumbers or Gas Safe engineers, so there's no separate appointment to organise.
- Packaging and old units cleared -- Boxes, offcuts and anything being replaced are removed and disposed of properly by a registered waste carrier before the fitter leaves.
- Final check and sign-off -- Doors and drawers are run through once more and surfaces wiped down, with the finished work covered by the 5-year labour and installation guarantee and 2-year product guarantee.
How Kitchen Furniture Assembly Is Priced
Price is driven mainly by how many pieces there are to build and how much adjustment each one needs - a straightforward run of wall units costs less to assemble than a corner base unit that has to be scribed into an out-of-square wall, or a larder with several internal fittings. Adding electrical, plumbing or gas connection work for the finished item is quoted and charged separately from the basic assembly rate, since it's carried out by a different qualified trade. The only way to give an accurate figure is to see the furniture, the room and the access involved, which is why we quote in writing after a free visit rather than over the phone - the price given is the price charged, with nothing added once the job is under way.
Flat-Pack Assembly: DIY vs a General Assembler vs a Kitchen Specialist
| Doing it yourself | A general flat-pack assembler | Derby Kitchen Fitter | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Understands kitchen-specific fixings (wet zones, worktop overhangs, appliance housings) | Learn as you go | Not always - kitchens are one job among many | Kitchen specialists who fit this kind of furniture every week |
| Plumbing, electrical or gas connection on the same visit | Not possible without separate trades | Rarely offered | Available in-house from Part P electricians, NVQ-qualified plumbers and Gas Safe engineers |
| Guarantee on the finished work | None | Varies trader to trader | 5-year labour and installation guarantee, 2-year guarantee on products |
| Old packaging and units taken away legally | Your responsibility | Sometimes an added extra | Handled by a registered waste carrier as standard |
| Local property knowledge (older Derby homes, uneven floors, tight galley kitchens) | N/A | Varies | 20 years working in homes across Derby and Derbyshire |
Qualified Trades, Not Just an Extra Pair of Hands
A flat-pack corner base unit is the item that catches most assemblers out - the carcass looks straight on the diagram, but if the wall it's going against has crept even a few millimetres out of square, which isn't unusual in a Derby terrace with over a century of settlement behind it, the door won't close cleanly unless someone shaves the back panel to match. On our jobs that cut is made by a joiner trained to City & Guilds standard with a bench-joinery background, not judged by eye against the packaging. The same goes further down the list: a socket moved for a coffee machine is wired and certified by a Part P registered electrician, a dishwasher or sink connection goes to a plumber qualified to NVQ Level 2 and City & Guilds, and a gas hob is only ever connected and commissioned by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Old boxes, offcuts and the units they're replacing leave the property with a registered waste carrier rather than being left for the homeowner to sort out. Because the same crew fits complete kitchens supplied by Howdens, Wren Kitchens, Magnet and the premium German handleless ranges as day-to-day work, building individual pieces from any of those brands is routine rather than a first attempt - and the finished assembly carries the same 5-year labour and installation guarantee, plus a 2-year guarantee on the furniture itself, as a full fit.
Areas We Cover for Kitchen Furniture Assembly
Our workshop is at Sunny Hill in Derby, so most city assembly jobs - Chellaston, Alvaston, Sinfin, Allestree, Littleover, Mickleover, Oakwood and the streets around the city centre and Cathedral Quarter - are a short run for the van and can usually be booked in quickly. Older terraced streets in Normanton, Pear Tree and around the Arboretum tend to have narrower hallways and less square walls, which affects how units are scribed in rather than whether the job can be done. Beyond Derby itself we cover the wider county on the same basis: Belper, Duffield and Wirksworth along the Derwent Valley, Chesterfield, Ripley, Alfreton, Heanor and Ilkeston to the north and east, Long Eaton and Swadlincote to the south, and out towards the Peak District fringe in Matlock, Bakewell and Buxton, plus over the border into Nottingham. On rural and Peak-edge addresses we ask about parking and van access when booking, since some of those lanes and cottage driveways are tighter than a typical Derby cul-de-sac.
Common Questions About Kitchen Furniture Assembly
Will you assemble furniture we bought from somewhere other than Derby Kitchen Fitter?
Yes. We regularly assemble flat-pack kitchen furniture bought direct from retailers and supply-only brands such as Howdens, Wren Kitchens, Magnet and the premium German handleless ranges, as well as dining tables and chairs bought to match. We just need to know the brand and item count before booking so the right amount of time is set aside.
Can you connect the electrics, plumbing or gas while you're assembling the units?
Assembly itself is priced separately from any connection work, but it can be booked for the same visit. Sockets and lighting are wired and certified by our Part P registered electricians, sink and dishwasher connections go to plumbers qualified to NVQ Level 2 and City & Guilds, and any gas hob or range cooker is connected and commissioned by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
What happens if a part turns up missing or damaged when the boxes are opened?
We check the boxes and fixing packs against the order before starting, so this is usually caught early. We'll help raise it with the retailer and can often supply common fixings on the day, though we can't guarantee a match for hardware that's specific to one retailer's range.
How long does a typical assembly job take?
It depends on how many pieces there are and how much scribing and adjustment each one needs against the actual wall and floor - a handful of wall units is a shorter job than a full run of base cabinets with a corner unit and a larder. We give a realistic time as part of the written quote once we've seen what's involved.
Do you take the old units and packaging away?
Yes, as standard. We're a registered waste carrier, so old units, offcuts and packaging are removed and disposed of legally rather than left for you to deal with.
Our kitchen is in an older Derby terrace and nothing in the room is quite square - does that cause problems?
It's common in Derby's older terraced housing and it's factored into how we work rather than treated as a problem on the day. Units are scribed and fixed to the wall and floor as they actually are, with any cutting done by joiners trained to City & Guilds standard, so doors and drawers still close flush against an old wall.
Can you assemble furniture in a flat or apartment with restricted parking, such as the city centre?
Yes, we just ask about parking, loading and lift access when booking so the visit can be planned properly - it affects how we schedule the day rather than whether the job can be done.
Is the finished assembly guaranteed?
Yes. All assembly work carries our 5-year labour and installation guarantee, and the furniture itself carries a 2-year guarantee.

Still Got Flat-Pack Boxes Leaning Against the Wall?
Every day a new table or cabinet sits in its box is a day it isn't being used, and flat-pack parts have a habit of going missing the longer they're left out. Booking a visit gets everything built properly first time, backed by a 5-year labour and installation guarantee, so there's no wondering whether a wobbly joint will need sorting again in a few months. Get in touch to arrange a time that suits.
