If you're comparing worktop materials for a Derby kitchen and keep coming back to quartz, this page sets out what our fitters actually do on site, what affects the price, and how quartz holds up against granite and marble in day-to-day use. For the full range of colours and finishes we install, see our quartz worktops page.
Everything below reflects how our own stonemasons and joiners template, cut and fit quartz on the kitchens we work on across Derby and Derbyshire, alongside the beauty and durability detail already covered on this page.
What Our Quartz Worktop Service Covers
- Free design visit to discuss quartz colour, finish and edge profile against your kitchen plan
- Laser templating once your base units are fitted and level, for a millimetre-accurate cutting pattern
- Cutting, sink and hob cut-outs, and edge polishing carried out by our stonemasons
- Seamless jointing between worktop sections so seams sit in the least visible position
- Removal and legal disposal of your old worktop, handled under our registered waste carrier status
- Sink and tap reconnection by our own plumbers, qualified to NVQ Level 2 and City & Guilds
Not Included / Costed Separately
- Structural changes to cabinets or base units needed to support the new worktop - priced separately once we've seen the site
- Gas hob or range cooker reconnection, which is carried out and commissioned by our Gas Safe registered engineers as a separate part of the job
- Fitting quartz supplied and pre-cut by another company - assessed case by case, since fit tolerances vary between fabricators
- Repairs to existing stone or solid-surface worktops we didn't originally supply and fit
How We Template, Fabricate and Fit Your Quartz Worktop
- Design visit and quote -- We measure your kitchen, talk through quartz colours, finishes and edge profiles, and confirm the layout against your cabinet plan. You get a written, itemised quote before anything is booked in.
- Laser templating -- Once your base units are fitted and level, we return to laser template the worktop. This captures the exact shape, including sink and hob cut-outs, to a tighter tolerance than a tape measure allows.
- Cutting and fabrication -- Your template goes for cutting, with cut-outs formed and edges polished to the profile you chose. Joint positions are planned in advance so seams sit away from the sink or a visible corner run where possible.
- Removal and fitting -- On fitting day we remove the old worktop and dispose of it legally as a registered waste carrier, then fit and seam the new quartz sections.
- Reconnection and sign-off -- Sinks and taps are reconnected by our own qualified plumbers, hob connections handled by Gas Safe engineers where relevant, and we walk through the finished worktop with you before confirming your guarantee in writing.
What Affects the Price of a Quartz Worktop
Quartz costs more up front than laminate and most engineered alternatives, and the final figure depends on the quartz range you choose, the total run length, how many cut-outs and joints are needed, and the edge profile - a simple pencil edge costs less to fabricate than a bullnose or waterfall end panel. Because every kitchen's cut-outs and joint positions differ, we don't quote a price without seeing the space or working from your final cabinet layout - a site visit lets us measure accurately and give you a written, itemised figure rather than a rough estimate that changes once we arrive.
Quartz Compared With Granite and Marble
| Quartz | Granite | Marble | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surface | Non-porous, engineered | Porous, needs periodic sealing | Porous, needs regular sealing |
| Pattern | Consistent, engineered colours and patterns | Unique per slab, natural variation | Unique veining, natural variation |
| Everyday cleaning | Warm water and mild detergent | Sealant reapplied periodically | Sealant reapplied regularly, sensitive to acidic spills |
| Heat handling | Copes with normal kitchen use; avoid direct contact with hot pans | Good heat resistance | Can etch or discolour with heat and acids |
| Best suited to | Busy kitchens wanting a natural look with less upkeep | Kitchens wanting a one-of-a-kind natural slab | Statement pieces where upkeep matters less |
Stonemasons and Qualified Trades Under One Roof
A quartz worktop is only as good as its fit - a joint that isn't seated properly or a cut-out a few millimetres out shows immediately. Our worktops are templated, cut and jointed by our own stonemasons as part of our stone and solid-surface specialism, which also covers granite, marble, Dekton, Corian and Minerva, so the team working on your quartz has done the same job across those harder materials too. Sink and tap reconnections go to plumbers qualified to NVQ Level 2 and City & Guilds rather than whoever's free that day, and any hob work is passed to our Gas Safe registered engineers. Every installation carries our 5-year labour and installation guarantee alongside a 2-year guarantee on the quartz itself, given to you in writing before work starts, and your old worktop is removed and disposed of legally through our registered waste carrier status rather than left for you to deal with.
Quartz Worktop Fitting Across Derby and the Surrounding Area
We template and fit quartz worktops from our workshop on Stenson Rd in Sunny Hill, Derby, working out across Derbyshire and into Nottinghamshire. Beyond Derby itself, we regularly fit in Chesterfield, Long Eaton, Belper, Ilkeston, Heanor, Alfreton, Swadlincote, Ripley, Matlock, Dronfield, Duffield, Wirksworth, Bakewell and Buxton, as well as into Nottingham. Being based locally means the gap between the laser templating visit and the final fit can usually be kept short, which matters with a worktop - the sooner it's fitted after templating, the sooner your kitchen is back in use.
Quartz Worktop Questions From Derby Customers
Is quartz actually as durable as granite?
Quartz is engineered rather than mined as a single slab, which gives it a slight edge over granite in resistance to chipping and cracking, though both are strong choices. The bigger practical difference is that quartz doesn't need the periodic resealing granite does, because its surface is non-porous rather than naturally porous.
Can I put a hot pan straight onto a quartz worktop?
It's best not to. Quartz copes well with the general warmth of kitchen use, but direct, prolonged contact with a hot pan can affect the resin binder, so we'd recommend a trivet or pan stand, the same as with most other worktop materials.
Does quartz need sealing like granite or marble?
No. Because quartz is non-porous, it doesn't absorb liquids the way natural stone can, so there's no sealing schedule to keep on top of. A wipe with warm water and a mild detergent is all it needs day to day.
How long does templating and fitting take?
Templating happens once your base units are fitted and level, since we need the final cabinet positions for an accurate template. Fitting itself is normally completed in a day; the gap between templating and fitting depends on fabrication, which we'll confirm at quote stage.
Will you fit quartz I've bought from another supplier?
We assess this case by case, since fit tolerances and edge profiles vary between fabricators. Our own installations are templated and cut by us specifically so the joints and cut-outs are accurate, which is harder to guarantee with worktops sourced and cut elsewhere.
What happens to my old worktop?
We remove it as part of the job and dispose of it legally - we're a registered waste carrier, so it doesn't get left in a skip on the drive or become something you have to arrange separately.
What guarantee comes with a quartz worktop installation?
Installation and labour are covered by our 5-year guarantee, with a 2-year guarantee on the quartz product itself. Both are given to you in writing at sign-off, not just quoted verbally.
Can quartz be repaired if it's chipped or cracked?
Small chips can sometimes be filled and colour-matched, but a crack running through a section usually means replacing that piece, since quartz doesn't take repair the way softer materials can be reshaped. This is one reason getting the cut-outs and support right at fitting stage matters.
Do you handle plumbing and hob reconnection as part of the job?
Sink and tap reconnections are carried out by our own plumbers, qualified to NVQ Level 2 and City & Guilds. Gas hob or range cooker reconnection is handled by our Gas Safe registered engineers, so it's commissioned properly rather than left as a DIY job afterwards.
